The world's most perfect song
Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"

followed by Louie Armstrong singing "What A Wonderful World"

1. Both are excellent.
I have a soft spot for their lyrics and delivery, but they are both really nice compositons as well.

Other pop faves of mine include:

"End of the World" Skeeter Davis

"A Dream Goes On Forever" Todd Rundgren

and one that makes a lot of lists, deservedly,

"God Only Knows" Brian Wilson

2. I hate to be the grammar police - but somebody's got to do it.
Assuming that Over the Rainbow is, indeed, a perfect song, and assuming that Louie's version of It's a Wonderful World is a perfect song, then they are both equally perfect, as "perfect" is an absolute. Neither is "most" perfect.

That would be like saying that turdface Bush is, the most perfect idiot in the world. He is, argueably, the biggest idiot, but in terms of perfection, he is merely a "perfect" idiot, and, I might add, a goddamned perfect fool.

Disclaimer: My attempt was to treat this grammatical lapse in a semi-humorous manner. I have not meant to offend anyone by my comments. If anyone has been offended in any way by this post, I humbly apologize.

Additionally, I fully realize that the sentences in this post are probably run-on and may contain other grammatical lapses and or typos or mispellngs. However, I am the grammar police and you are not.

BTW, I agree wholeheatedly with your sentiments as to the above songs.

3. I might have to add "Imagine"
If I have a religion, that song would pretty much sum it up. The music, simple and understated. I don't think the whole plight of man could be phrased more succinctly than in that song.

4. Several come to mind....
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 12:33 AM by Rowdyboy
"Fire and Rain" by James Taylor-the song still moves me after nearly 40 years
"Memory" from CATS-chills go down my spine everytime it plays
"Thick as a Brick" Jethro Tull-once again, I am 18 and open to anything
"I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ, Superstar-the song gets to me on a gut level (I don't particularly see it in a religious light).

thats a good start....

10. "La Vie En Rose"
Purists will insist on Piaf, but--of all people--Melissa Manchester's version is pretty damn sublime, especially the long, drawn-out sigh of ecstasy on the next-to-last note.
