The first quarter in particular of the Auburn-Alabama game was a beautiful thing - Auburn just couldn't touch the ball without scoring a touchdown (21 unanswered points), and Alabama didn't get over the 50 and into Auburn territory until well into the second quarter!

will never be known among the truly great college FB teams in history...i don't care who you are, what style you play or who you play against, truly great teams do NOT give up 30+ ppg on a regular basis to clearly inferior teams

USC has more than earned a place in NCAA history for its current winning streak. Last year I would have bet even money on them against any pro team in the country.

I was rooting for the upset tonight, but feel no letdown at the outcome. USC is not a team I love to hate.

68. Give me a break
Pete Carroll is a defensive coach. Last year's USC team was excellent defensively. Many high draft picks including both DTs in the first two rounds. Then a 3rd DT was picked by the Dolphins in the expansion draft. This year's team is very young defensively plus tons of injuries. But those guys can get healthy and if anyone thinks Texas will waltz up and down the field in the Rose Bowl good luck to that handicapping.

This was by far the most points USC has allowed during the winning streak, the previous high being 34. I agree USC is vulnerable this year, but not to recognize the difference in defensive personnel from this year compared to the last two is not reality. Paul Pinegar is hardly inferior. He is a 4 year starter who will be a fairly high draft pick. Fresno State has only 2 losses and on both of them they led by 11 or more at Oregon and at USC. BTW, Oregon and USC have zero losses between them other than Oregon's loss to USC, so Fresno is hardly a slouch.

I'm just extremely relieved USC pulled it out. The pointspread of USC giving 23 points was a farce. My Canes lost, not exactly shocking, and if both 'SC and Miami had gone down I basically would have ignored college football the rest of the season. Well, probably not but I was thinking that way a half hour ago.

73. Hell, my parents were going to root for Fresno State!
Even after shelling out all that dough for me to supposedly forge a future with a USC degree. I say "were going to" because that depended on a Miami win tonight. They went to the game and after Miami lost there was no reason to root for Fresno State.

Yeah, the Lounge sucked today without a genital-based college football thread. I turned off DU when the Canes lost and basically sweated the USC result for two hours.

71. I doubt that will be comparable
UCLA is much softer than Fresno State on the line of scrimmage plus there is the familiarity aspect. USC had no feel for Fresno State's personnel. They know UCLA well plus that's by far the biggest game of the year for USC. Nothing is remotely close. UCLA will have to play 20 points better than any performance this year to make it close.

75. usc doesn't play any defense
and neither does UCLA. UCLA's offense can keep up with USC's and put up a lot of points. I'm not saying UCLA will win, but it will be competitive.

if USC played a team with a defense like LSU or Penn State, I think they would probably lose.

77. That's a legit argument
Although I would assert it's not a matter of not playing defense, it's the defensive personnel. USC is still playing aggressive on defense but the results aren't there. The national media doesn't talk much about all the USC defensive injuries this year, particularly at LB. They are playing guys who never were supposed to take the field this year, and also at CB.

USC lost not only the DTs from last year but also the DL coach left to take over as the head coach at Mississippi. It's been somewhat worse than expected on the field but everyone on the program knew the defense would be significantly down this year. I still think the month to prepare for Texas and the healthier defenders will result in a much better defensive effort, especially since it's essentially at home in the Rose Bowl.

UCLA is very soft on the offensive and defensive lines. Playing at home they might be able to mask that but in the Coliseum I think it will be over fairly early. A win like USC had tonight tends to energize a team, since that was a legit hurdle and every bit as difficult as advertised.
