Poll question: Do you use the ignore function? |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 12:50 PM by Screaming Lord Byron
I never have, so I don't even know what it does to the people you put on it. What does happen?

I am suprised that you only have 8-10 ignored. I thought it would be closer to 40 or 50.

There is a group of about ten people. I felt bad because I had always sworn I would never use ignore, but then I relented and used it for a few days.
I then stopped using it. I just mentally ignore those people now.
Also, not clicking on posts they start is a better way.

What's interesting, is that the poster is a one trick pony; there's only one topic that he/she will show up for, and on that topic they are as rabid as any fundy(the topic's not religion, though).

For a month or so I had two people on ignore, but my curiousity got the better of me when I saw 'ignored' under one of my posts. I took the people off ignore only to find a very nice and helpful response. Oops. Needless to say that person is off my ignore list.
The other person I put on just because their posts were so one-sided and nasty (and no, despite my Kerry avatar it wasn't a Dean supporter). It's been weeks since I've seen an 'ignore' message, so I think the person has left.

For the longest time I tried very hard not to put anyone on ignore. But a few days ago, I add the first ever person to my ignore list.
It was a culmination of months of candidate bashing by this person, and they went over the edge by attacking the Queen of England for giving Clark an award, saying knighthoods are only given to PNAC neo-con republicans. After that, I stopped visiting the P/C forum for a while because of that idiocy. I recently ran into that person again in the GD forum, and nothing has changed, so I reluctantly put the first person on my ignore list.
I'm trying really hard not to add a second person to the list.

34. Generally, I resist the "igrnore" function because I want to hear what |
|
everyone has to say.
However, in two extreme cases I put people on ignore...
One because he was a shrieking Commie who wouldn't stop shrieking even if I did try to chill things out. You can only take so much of that.
The other was just a big jerkoff. Condescending and NEVER with anything good (or interesting for that matter) to say. You know the type. Weasely...always ripping everyone just for the sport of it.
You know who you are...

As I've said to others who have gained my respect that are on your end of the spectrum, I would gladly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you at the barricades, but after it's over don't expect me to surrender my property or start talking dialectical materialism...

Bwah! I knew that you loved me;-)
We certainly have a great deal in common in our personal beliefs of what the Bushites really are. Ie. Fascists.
"As I've said to others who have gained my respect that are on your side, I would gladly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you at the barricades"
There are no real "sides" I think, just different interpretations of some subjective stuff.
"but after it's over don't expect me to surrender my property"
Property you say? "Property" is a funny thing. There's Personal Property and "Real" Property....There's also the question as to the morality (I know, I'm an Atheist:eyes:) of the relationship between the Renter and the Land "Lord". That said the idea of the "Home" is one I hold dear even in my Democratic Socialism. Beyond that is where the tire hits the pavement.
"or start talking dialectical materialism..."
Oy vey! Since that gives me a mild headache, that'll be the day:-)
This is all very subjective stuff.
One thing that really effected me recently was "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis. In case you haven't read it I won't give it away but needless to say "Cooperative Commonwealth" looks mighty fine after the madness.

39. Yes, but because of my own wierdness |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 06:53 PM by BareKnuckledLiberal
The list is currently at two.
I don't think I've ever encountered anyone I hadn't gone ballistic with that I also didn't agree with at some other time, so I don't put them on ignore.
The people I have blocked are those whose posts I find to be incredibly annoying, in my own idiosyncratic view. In each case, I'll note that they aren't bad people at all, I just can't take their posts, and they're difficult or impossible to ignore.
I also find those "700 club" messages annoying, but fortunately, they only happen twice in a DUser's "career"; it doesn't mean I'm an offended Fundy. I cringe at the cats-are-children posts, so I don't click on those threads. I still like cats, and although I like dogs even more than cats, I still can't take the dogs-are-children threads, either.
These annoyances are just wierd idiosyncracies of mine, have no deep or real "meaning", and I certainly don't hate the people who make those posts. I simply don't read them. I suspect there are people who make a note to avoid posts I make for similar reasons. To each their own.
But for some reason, putting someone on ignore because I don't like them or agree with them strikes me as being just wrong. Unless the person is stalking you, constantly picks fights, or is making your life hell.
If you ever find out you're on my ignore list -- you can be sure it's not because of any rational reason.
