Hollywood going all out to promote "Narnia" |
|
My local mall had a HUGE display all set up with several "snow globes" featuring scenes from the movie with nearly life-sized characters in it. Now, instead of your normal, "Take a picture with Santa" display, it's Santa & Narnia together. It could not have been cheap for the makers of the movie, as the little brochure said it is at malls all around the country.
I thought it was a bit much, but I'm sure my 2 3/4 year old daughter will like it. The movie itself might be a bit much for her at this age, however.

1. I read an article that said the studio was targeting churches. |
|
It mentioned the congregations would only see "pastor-approved" movies. :eyes:

4. Well, don't dismiss it just because it might be "pastor-approved". |
|
I'm not sure I want to see the movie, but the books are great. It's unfortunate if we allow the RWers to spoil good things for us.

5. Sorry, I was dismissing the fact that grown adults need approval. |
|
Not whether the pastor liked it or not for whatever reason.

Some "adults" need to have a handbook for every move they make. I'm surprised they don't call their ministers for permission to take a potty break.

8. I used to think the self-help/Dr. Phil craze was bad enough. |
|
But consuming advice on what movies to see from a guy who tells you God will hate you otherwise is going way too far.

9. I have fond memories of the books as a child |
|
They are partly the reason I've been an avid reader my whole life. I remember reading "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe" for school when I was very young, and then going on the read the rest of that series, which led to The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, the Sword of Shannara, etc.
Of course, when I was in elementary school, I probably didn't get the Christianity references and all.

12. I loved the whole series |
|
and have read it to children dozens of times without ever once discussing Christian references. It is first and foremost a story. When kids get older and read it to their kids, they might (or might not!) pick up on the allegory.
I am really looking forward to the movie because I've been told they planned to stay very, very close to the books.
I hope DU folks don't like the RW's excitement about the books keep them from good entertainment. This isn't another Passion of the Christ.

Though, I will admit the hype around "Passion of the Christ" turned me off...

2. If Narnia is anywhere nearly as good as the books it'll be great! |
|
However I do think Santa & Narnia together is over the top.

was in the middle of the huge Narnia display, so I assume they are together - you have to go through the Narnia displays to get to Santa, and it looks like his set-up was not the typical one, but rather Narnia-ish. I got there too late last night & they were closed to verify 100%, though.

Was part of the Narnia cycle. They're not adding santa to narnia, but capitalizing on it.

7. Yeah but will it get kids readding- |
|
I just hope that they dont xenafy the book. I also wish that when people would make epics like this there would be some kind of word from the producer stars urging them to read the material in its original form. Lotr rings is my favorite movie and one of the best adaptations of any novel i have seen but it was an adaptation not cannon. Lol I still miss Tom B and Glorifindel.

15. Me, too...I always thought the "Wights on the Barrow-Downs" chapter |
|
was one of the scariest, most powerful parts of LOTR, and Bombadil one of Tolkien's most endearing characters. Heck, I even miss Fatty Bolger! But having said all that, I agree that the movies are superb. The love that everyone involved has for the books comes shining through. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the "Narnia" adaptation, also.

18. I think Fatty was in the extended DVD |
|
If I recall... more like a walk-in cameo type role.
And, while Tom Bombadil was missed, the movies were already exceptionally long by movie standards - what other parts would you have cut out to have ole' Tom & Goldberry in the movie?

16. The talking wolf looks dumb. |
|
I always had a problem with a Narnia film because you're never going to have cool talking animals.
When the wolf says "Take them", I laugh out loud.
I may be able to look past that.... I don't know. It's kind of far down on my list, but I'm sure the kiddo will bump it to number 1. They do seem to be pushing it like crazy, and that kind of bothers me.

It looks like Lord of the Rings, because Peter Jackson's studio did the effects. It looks great, even though I didn't really like the books.
(If Aslan knew he would be resurrected, what does it matter that he died? What kind of sacrifice is that? If Susan likes lipstick and boys, why should she be excluded from heaven? Why shouldn't girls have swords? If you and your whole family are killed in a train wreck... etc. etc.)
