Quick, fellow DUers!
I just entered the 700 club. I want out. Today! I just need 100 DUers asking me one quick question.

Yes, I know it's pretty dull, but everyone should get a chance, no? :eyes:

89. How gorgeous!!!! But he/she(?) looks sad.
For a brief time I had a dog like that. His name was Fluffy for obvious reasons. He had a sad ending but I provided him with as happy a life as I could for the few months he was with me.
I hope this beautiful creature spends plenty of time among it's humans. Dogs sure love their humans.

99. My mistake....
...every dog I have had became instantly sad when put on a chain. (They know that I can sense this which is why they play the "I am so sad" card on me. It generally works too. His fur looks drop dead gorgeous. It has taken lots and lots of grooming to maintain it like this so I know he gets plenty of attention from his humans! I currently own an aging red-nosed female pitt bull. She requires far less grooming, on the other hand she feels that she never gets enough tummy rubs. (My hands have the permanent oder of pitt-bull tummy on them, so I guess I have been well trained).

103. He's actually much happier
when the temperature drops in fall. It's a pure breed Samoyed, and his thick fur makes him sometimes miserable on hot summer days. But cold and snow, even he's from Italy, seem to be his elements.

I see who's the alpha in your family. ;)

40. That's easy:
Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 03:58 PM by Call Me Wesley
Answer: Four hundred and sixty-two:

Twelve to investigate Clinton's involvement in the failure of the old bulb,

Twenty-three to deregulate the light bulb industry,

Sixteen to cut funding for alternative lighting R&D,

Thirty-four to cut the tax rate on light bulbs,

Fifty-three to design a blockgrant so the states can change the bulb,

Forty-one to talk with defense contractors about night-vision gear instead, and

two hundred and eighty-three to pass a law making it illegal to discuss naked bulbs (or screwing anything) on the Internet.

Remember: Google is your friend! ;)

But to the answer: (my google is heating up)

None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are a delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effect. Why do you hate freedom? Are you French?

53. Great answer! LOL! Here's mine:
1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed.

2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed.

3. One to decide that, yeah, it IS dark in here.

4. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb.

5. One to tell the nations of the world that they are either for changing the light bulb or for darkness.

6. One to give a billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for the new light bulb.

7. One to arrange a photograph of Bush*, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner: "Light Bulb Change Accomplished."

8. One administration insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how Bush was literally in the dark.

9. One to viciously smear #8.

10. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how George Bush* has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along.

11. And finally, one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 05:52 PM by Call Me Wesley
That's what Heidi posted in another thread:

"A couple of months ago, I sold two huge paintings in advance of an exhibit, and when I told my husband, he gave me a hug and a kiss and said, "Good job, Ensign Crusher!" (He loathes Crusher, but was being a smarty-pants.) Since then, "Call Me Wesley" has become a goofy euphemism for "Praise me." When I was registering his username at DU, the name Wesley was taken, so I registered him as Call Me Wesley."

Wesley Crusher: The most controversial character on Star Trek ever. He's a doofus. (How was that, I said 'Doofus'. Am I a big bad ass or not?!)

126. Satchmo has never had a dental.
He was too sick for the anesthesia until we switched his food ... and it took 7 years to figure out what was going on with him. Now I'm fighting the fear that we finally got him healthy only to lose him to the anesthesia. Bad, bad way to be thinking. He will probably sleep it off when he gets home -- he likes our bed. I just want to know NOW that he'll be OK.

Does Ginger get a dental every year? We used to do that with our old Siamese, but none of our current kitties have had one.

127. He has a medical exam every year,
but we do it only if it's really necessary. Some cats have a genetic preposition for parodontosis, and if it's left untreated, it can lead to kidney failure.

He's also on a special cat food diet since he had problems with his tummy a few times. All's well now.

I'm sure Satchmo will be OK. No worries.

137. Thanks.
Satchmo is prone to gingivitis. And he lost one of his canines recently -- that's what he was going in for last time, to get it extracted.

We have a new homeopathic vet who comes to the house (our cats HATE to ride in the car) and looks them over. They used to go in for medicals, but I lost confidence in the vet who couldn't get a handle on their IBD. She kept prescribing the IVD food that made all the cats puke and get diarrhea. Both Abys were way too sick to even consider dentals. Now we feed raw, which is frowned upon by most conventional vets.

Thanks for reassuring me. And Satchmo thanks you. :loveya:

147. Oooo -- I would love a Bengal!
But if you get one, be prepared to feed it some "unconventional" food, especially if it gets stomatitis and IBD. Our Abys can only tolerate raw food (rabbit, chicken, game hen), no veggies, fruits, or grains. None of the meds worked for them at all, in fact they only made them worse. I don't know if it has anything to do with them being purebred or it's the breed (although gingivitis and stomatitis are common in Abys).

Thanks for the vibes ... and tell Heidi I'm glad she's in love with Satchmo. I am too -- he's a real sweetheart. I'll post when he's all done and FINE (he WILL be fine).

138. My rescued cat went in for dental surgery.
And it made all the difference in the world with her. She was a terrified little being, hiding and I was unable to even touch her. But after her dental surgery, she was a totally different cat, would get up in my chair with me and sit next to the computer. I wish I had known immediately, since she must have been in pain. So look forward to your cat feeling better, since pet dental care is one of the most important things, according to my vet, that many people fail to think of. Kudos to you for getting this done. And also know that there are new and safer anesthetics. Your kitty will be fine and better than ever. Let us know...

145. Well, that's the hard part of it.
We finally got Satchmo's IBD cleared up. His skin is nice (he used to get nasty crusty things), and he's eating well. The tooth that fell out was bothering him, but he seems perfectly comfortable since it came out. He's cuddly and feels fine. He's always chattering at me. Now I'm afraid we're going to go backwards 100 mph.

They're supposed to call me before they start ... still waiting. This is so hard. I will definitely let you know, but it could be hours before I hear anything.

159. I know exactly what you mean. The first time I took this cat to the vet,
My friend, who has caught cats for the SPCA, had to come and catch her for me, in my house! And she bit him! Yikes! They had to sedate her to examine her and she hid and refused to even come out and eat for three days after that trauma. But after she felt so much better, she completely came around. I firmly believe that they know when you're trying to help them.:-)

And I know about waiting. My little rescued dog has had two big surgeries in the past two years. But I'm told that she's now better than at any time since I've had her. So hang in there and know you're doing the best thing for your kitty's quality of life. And, if you get too anxious, call them for an update. They certainly must be used to this and will understand.

I'll be thinking of you both and wishing for only good news...

#162. Still nervous, but doing better.

Our last vet traumatized Satchmo SO much that he was a total basket case for 2 days. I didn't even recognize him when I went in to pick him up -- he was all ruffled up and hissing, ears back, and looking very angry. I reached into the cage to get him and he calmed right down. I think he knew THAT vet wasn't trying to help him!

He likes our homeopathic vet ... but that one doesn't do dentals, so we had to go to someone he recommended. My husband dropped him off and says they're really nice over there. They didn't get mad at me for calling, either. The other vet put unflattering stuff about me in Satchmo's records just because I called after 4 1/2 hours. (Yep, there are good ones and bad ones.)

You have had some experience with this! Wow!

Thanks for helping me through this!

168. Glad you're doing better and I saw your post.
And I know about differences in vets. With where I took my cat, there is no comparison. I first took her to the animal hospital where I borrowed the have-a-heart trap to finally bring her inside, trap and all. Big mistake. They took 48 hours to examine her (because she was a stray and I had to convince them that she was really mine and I'd pay for her care!) and they only treated the most obvious thing. So I took her to my vet - much further away - but who also uses alternative medicine and he's the one who turned her into a lap cat. He treats the whole cat...O8)

And they shouldn't get irritated at you for calling! This is your cat they're treating and you have a right to be concerned! Mine even calls the next day just to ask how my pet is doing, even if it was just a routine visit!O8)

And, yup, I sure have had experience with this. My vet's staff is practically family, I've been there so often...:D

The fact that your kitty is awake is the best sign, since the anesthetic is the part I find most worrisome, though, as I've said, they've made great strides with this. And your vet is probably waiting to call you when she's thoroughly examined the cat and has all the answers to give you. Don't fret. It sounds like everything is turning out just fine...

175. Thanks.
I haven't been able to do anything all day ... just sit by the phone and wait!

My regular vet answers his emails, which is great! When the Abys were recovering from IBD, I had lots of questions ... especially since it took so long for Satchmo's skin to heal. The vet always emailed back within a few hours, sometimes minutes, and said, "the cat's fine!" Haha. :)

I'm glad you have a good one with a good staff! And I love that your vet uses alternative medicine. Some people call it "pseudoscience", but it works. My vet is heavily into nutritional solutions and homeopathic remedies, not meds.

Our old vet changed staff like we change underwear, so we never got to know them even though we'd been going there for almost 11 years. They were very poorly trained (probably underpaid, too), which is a bad reflection on the vet IMO.

I even rejected the first vet that was recommended to me for the dental b/c his staff was so bad -- I was in tears when I hung up the phone. Can't have that.

Well, he's not awake ... he's waking up. I think it's still a good sign. My husband says the vet just wants to tell me more details. But what is taking so long? I know, I know ... I must be patient! How would you like to be the vet who has to deal with me? :)

Thanks.

Edited on Mon Nov-21-05 12:15 PM by Rhiannon12866
is awake before they can see how he's really doing, vital signs and all that. And that can take quite awhile. When two of my dogs had generals in the am, they were still a little groggy and slept a lot when I brought them home in the evening. It's the same as for people, except they'd keep us overnight...

And my vet also answers e-mails.:D When my tiny dog was very sick, last spring, I finally posted on DU, in frustration, late one Saturday night, because I just couldn't get his meds into him. I got some amazing replies from my fellow DUers, but my vet also got back to my desperate e-mail, offering liquid meds instead of pills...O8)

And this guy does hire amazing staff. They know all my guys and like to talk about them almost as much as I do, LOL!:D He also has had turnover, but they seem to find other jobs involving animals, like the one who recently left to work with horses... And while I miss the ones who left, the new people seem just as concerned and want to get to know the animals.:-)

That unfortunate place where I first took my cat also has turnover, but you're right, this is a bad reflection on the vets, since they don't pay them well for their dedication and hard work. I know two women who worked there and left, even though they loved the job. One found she could make more money as a waitress and I ran into the other one working at a convenience store! You can tell a lot from the attitude of the staff...:-(

My vet uses both traditional and alternative medicine, depends on what's needed. Some people think I'm unhinged, but I've had two dogs and one cat receive acupuncture. My 18-year-old cocker had back problems and couldn't even stand, but electro acupuncture got him walking again, just fine, and it's non-invasive.:D

And it will take your cat awhile to wake up, though I know it's tough to wait... But it sure sounds like all is well and that your husband is right. They know you have questions and need to get all the answers for you. And my vet wouldn't mind you at all, since he's used to me, LOL! He told me once that he was told that 10% of his clients would make up 90% of his practice. Sounds like you and I are in that category!:pals:

Glad I can help, since I've sure been there.

195. Well, we haven't left yet ...
my husband called to say he's late.

I really do know intellectually that all those things have to be done. It's the Mom in me that worries to death about every little thing. I'm hopeless.

Your vet sounds wonderful! I'm glad he has the sense to hire (and, apparently, pay for) good staff.

Ha -- I know what you mean about people thinking you're unhinged. That's what they think of me when I tell them we feed raw food and keep fleas away with B Complex vitamins. Sabrina, Satchmo's mother, has had "adjustments" with some kind of electric thing that our vet uses. More like chiropractic. But, hey, I would try acupuncture long before I'd try meds and surgery. Sounds like you made exactly the right decision!

We are going to stop at Whole Foods and get some bison for Satchmo's supper. He LOVES it and he needs to have more red meat. :)

The thing about vets is that the not-so-good ones get 1) upset when you don't seem to love your pet enough to do everything they suggest and 2) then get mad when you love your pet so much that you worry when it has to get something done. When you have multiple pets, you certainly can take up a lot of a vet's time!
:pals:

I'll write when I get back. I'm SO excited to see my little boy. :bounce:

You're great. I don't remember meeting you in the Pets group before.

198. Sorry that you couldn't leave immediately.
I understand how anxious you've been. I've had to leave one cat and one dog overnight at the vet's. And while you'd think I'd be relieved to know that they're getting professional care, I still am a nervous wreck because I'm not with them... So I'm hopeless, too.:eyes:

And I was very fortunate to find this vet, since he's not only brilliant, but has an outstanding and caring staff. And, like I said, they know me and my guys. I adopt senior animals from rescue, so they've seen us pretty often, since mine tend to have more health problems than most. I first met him when my local vet ran out of options with my beloved cat, and she ended up requiring acupuncture. I didn't think this was strange, since I'd had it, so I knew what it was like and it helped me. And I'd been taking my older cocker almost two hours away for chiropractic. Turns out that this place was much closer, and they offered everything, which worked out well, since the chiropractic vet recommended acupuncture for him.:-)

And, though I am aware of feeding raw foods, I've always been reluctant to try it. I read the Pitcairn book, if you're familiar with that. Mine have all been on prescription diets, at one point or another, and this vet has also had me cook for them. I've been on DU for going on three years with no problems, but I got in trouble in one day on a dog message board, getting flamed for not feeding my guys raw foods and going with my vets' advice as to diet!

And I know what you mean about vets. I've been fortunate, except for the first vet who treated my cat who I rescued, myself. My regular local vet knew I'd do anything, so he sent me to this great place. And I tend to rely on this vet more and more, since he's brilliant and comes up with options that others wouldn't. And he is as dedicated as I'd expect him to be, and very patient with me. He treats me as an equal partner in my pets' health care, patiently explaining the options and giving me alternatives. He seems to enjoy the dialogue and that I care enough to want to be part of the decision-making process and gives me his time. When he diagnosed my other cocker with Cushing's Syndrome, I researched it to death, and disagreed about the meds to treat her. He went with my choice and, at the end of the day, said that I'd made the right decision, especially when she developed a more serious illness.:-(

Good luck with this and let me know! I'm so glad that your little guy is out of the woods and ready to come home! Kudos to you for the wonderful care that you give him! And I have posted in the pets' group, though I haven't been on DU as much, lately. I'm just glad I was on when you've been going through this, since I know what you're going through and I care. And I've gotten pet support from DU, so I'm always very happy to return the favor.:pals:

200. We're back! All of us. :) :) :) :)
Sounds like you and I are both hopeless.

What a nice vet! She came out to meet us and she visited us for a while. Sathmo's fine. :) :) :) :)

I was reluctant to try raw food, too, until we ran out of other options. The change in my cats is amazing, close to miraculous. I'm sorry you got flamed on that other message board. People who feed raw tend to be like ex-smokers ... myself included! We just don't want to see the problems that commercial food, especially dry, can cause, especially when it has caused so many problems in our own pets. (For us, the Rx food was the worst.) So we tend to get a little on the insufferable side.

I haven't read the Pitcairn book. I got my info from www.catinfo.org and then from www.therightremedy.com (that's my vet's website). Now I would never feed anything except raw on a regular basis, but I don't really expect people to take my word for it. :)

That's great that you take in those pets. The lady who owns catinfo.org is a vet who does rescue work. I posted one of her kitties on the pets and CA groups (she lives in CA) last week, hoping someone would give her a home. No such luck. :(

Yes, your vet has to work with you. I can't stand the vets who think they know it all. They simply don't have the time to find out as much stuff about every possible condition -- and if you have a problem with your pet, you will read everything out there! They're not going to do that. Fortunately, both vets we're working with now support our raw food decision. That was one of the things that made it impossible to work with the other vet! She wanted to keep throwing Rx diets and meds at the problem and the cats were literally dying ... she even SAID they were dying! The vet today said Satchmo looks REALLY good for someone who was dying a few months ago. :)

Phew, what a relief! He's running around the house now. That was a pretty long car ride -- this vet is not exactly down the road from us. Yay!

:bounce:

I'll be looking for you from now on. I can't thank you enough for being there and understanding. It's great to be able to come here for pet support. :pals:

203. I am so glad to hear your good news!
It sounds like you've also found a great vet you can work with and one who respects your decisions. That's one thing I've found is important to me, with the problems I've faced, a vet that will be forthcoming and consider me part of the process. My regular local vet is experienced and caring, but he's also older and more old-school. He's been there for me through some pretty dark days, but he is more apt to prescribe and answer only the questions I specifically ask. I pretty much decided to go with the acupuncture vet when my original vet was unable to cure a urinary infection in my older cocker. He kept telling me my dog was okay, on the basis of his tests, when I knew otherwise. The younger vet (only in this 40s, LOL!) kept recommending doing a culture to determine the most effective med to finally clear this up, but my original vet wouldn't go for it. So I finally took my Barney to him. He did the culture, prescribed a different antibiotic, and my dog was finally rid of the problem that had hung on for weeks. He's more expensive, but also more cutting edge and he made my dog well, with only one test.:-)

And I need to understand what's going on, since I'm the one who is the caregiver and need to have the big picture, if I'm going to make an informed decision. This guy is big on explanations, wants you to understand, will drag in reports or draw pictures, LOL! He wants you to know what he does and why, how things work. Despite that dog message board, I will do whatever is best for my pets and will make every effort to find out what that is.

Maybe my problem with the raw diet is that I don't understand enough about it, despite what I've read. Since my guys are older, I'm reluctant to make any big changes in their diet, though, as I've said, this guy has had me cook for my animals when they've needed it, a bland diet, for example, or, as you've said, red meat, when they've needed it. I'm not big on meat for myself, but I'll cook whatever he's suggested. The dog message board called my vets "shills for the kibble companies!" They obviously don't know my vet, so I signed off with them. If he prescribes a certain food, or wants to add something to their diet, he explains the reasons. And I particularly like that he's open to and knowledgeable about so many different forms of treatment. And he'll try herbs, for example, before prescribing medication. My guys have taken enough meds and I'm aware that they can have side effects. When my cocker developed cancer, he had numerous alternatives and, having gotten used to him and having developed a level of trust, I was perfectly open to brewing a tea for her that he believed would help. I know some people think I'm a little out there, but I know that there are no easy answers and sometimes you have to reach a little.

I'm so glad to hear that your little guy is home and is so much better. I can sense your relief and certainly can share that feeling. I've been there so often!:bounce:

And I'm glad that I could be there to share this with you. As I've said, there are so many caring people here who feel the same way about their pets and I've welcomed the support when I've needed it, though I consider my vet to be my primary source, LOL! And it doesn't hurt that he's also a political kindred spirit, knows about DU and has even answered cat health questions that I've brought him from this board, from DUers who weren't satisfied with their vet's answers, which I've posted. He was more than happy to help, though they weren't his patients. BTW, he also does rescue work and both of my vets have allowed me to post fliers from my friends in rescue, who are responsible for me having my guys.O8)

And I'll be looking for you, as well! I still remember the pet posts that my vet discussed with me and always wonder how the kitties are doing. Thanks so much for letting me know how this turned out and I really hope that he's okay and just glad to be home.:D

143. Did you know camels lived in Switzerland once upon a time?
Swiss unearth giant camel bones

Researchers from Basel and Zurich universities have discovered a new species of giant camel that lived thousands of years ago.

Bones uncovered in Syria reveal that the animal was more than three metres tall - closer in size to a giraffe than a modern camel.

"Between July and August we found several giant camel bones from different animals, which confirmed that this was a new species," said Jean-Marie Le Tensorer, professor of prehistory at Basel University.

The scientists unearthed more than 20 bone fragments from different layers of rock, leading them to believe that the animals had lived over a period of thousands, or even tens of thousands of years.

151. I know
I was just kidding.

When they unearth those camel bones, did they happen to find any Mountain Dew cans or Velveeta Cheese boxes? This would give me irrefutable evidence to counter my wife's claims that Switzerland has never been civilized. (I just tease her about this.)

Thanks for your help. It's really appreciated. :toast:

157. Not anymore.
I grew up in a ski-fanatic family, even some World Champions somewhere. I really liked it when I was a kid, but there was this day I had to wait at the lift far longer than it took me to ski down the mountain. That was the day I stopped, when the areas just became too crowded.

167. For my 800th post
I give you the painting that currently is on my wife's "easel." It is 4.5 feet x 3 feet, oil sketch on prepared paper, in preparation for a series of paintings about modern goddesses. She says she has lots of strong, beautiful goddesses here on DU to help inspire her.

Thank you all for helping me get out of the 700 club. :toast: It's greatly appreciated! :woohoo:

"You're _gone_." I love ya, my dear co-conspirator and husband, but if you acted toward me the way Tom Cruise acted on "Oprah" about Katie Holmes, I'd be callin' 911 to report a body-snatching and dialin' Skinner to report that your username had been misapropriated.

Heidi is a "work in progress" herself, far from perfect as she would tell you herself. But, we both feel it's very important to practice love, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity in everyday life.

193. No, it's not from Heidi.
It's from the Buddha:

May all beings have happiness and the cause of happiness.

May they be free of suffering and the cause of suffering.

May they never be separated from the supreme happiness without suffering.

May they remain in the boundless equanimity free from both attachment and hatred, knowing the equality of all that lives.
