Why I choose Pacifica over NPR |
|
I was just listening to Pacifica's daily news and information program, "Democracy Now." Among the topics they covered today:
- the protests in Miami (anti-FTAA) and London (anti-Bush);
- the bi-partisan congressional effort to reverse the FCC's latest relaxation of media-ownership laws;
- two dozen AARP members gathering outside the organization's Washington, D.C. office to protest the AARP's support of Bush's Medicare bill;
- an interview with the head of a commission that is attempting to investigate the 9/11 attack independent of the congressional commission.
At one point, when "Democracy Now" went to break, just for the hell of it I switched over to a local NPR affiliate. And what story were they covering? The Michael Jackson scandal!
'Nuff said.

I switched to Pacifica from NPR shortly after the 2000 election was stolen.

2. Do you mean...chose to donate to? |
|
Or chose to listen to? If you are sending bucks to Pacifica then you are a righteous dude.

3. At the moment, just listening... |
|
...but that's only because my finances are tight. I do, however, donate a few bucks each to DU and a couple of my local college radio stations.

5. that's righteous enough, then |
|
There is one college radio station in my town that plays one hour of Pacifia's "Democracy Now" per week. I don't listen, because I get news online anyway. I used to watch Democracy Now on Dishnetwork nightly, and I recall that Amy Goodman rules.
I remember the Greg Palast interview about the 4/2003 coup in Venezuela best.

4. you switched at the wrong moment |
|
NPR covered all of the above as well and more.
My favorite today was when they had a reporter in London ask Bush how it felt to be hated by so many people.
Although I'm not thrilled that my NPR member dollars are going for Michael Jackson stories, I have always liked the variety in the programming.
Besides- Isn't great that you have the option of flipping between the two?
