unless she was close to being in heat when she was spayed. Sometimes, the hormones will still be present for one last time, but she shouldn't be able to get pregnant at any rate.
On the other hand, older male cats can still roam and maintain certain aggressive traits if they weren't neutered until they were older.
Right now, kittens can be neutered and spayed as young as 3 months. Don't wait for them to go into estrus even once to help save them some grief.
