Question for you Harry Potter cognoscenti |
|
I've been a fan of the movies but haven't read the books. My question is ... Is Professor Snape a good guy or a bad guy.
I like the actor who plays him in the movies and I have the impression that, even though he's a hard ass, he is a good guy.

15. It's the pivot on which the series turns, isn't it? |
|
Saw the new movie last. Now the long, long wait for Book 7. Think there will be much of a to do when that is released? I think there will be mass hysteria. And I plan to participate.

He does good, he does bad (very bad). But no one TRULY knows which side he is really on...

5. Any real answer is a spoiler |
|
Though he's definately in the books more than in the movies, and at times is very good, at times very bad, at times good though he seems like he's doing bad when it's actually good, and at times it seems like he's doing good, but he's actually doing bad.
It's easy to see why Rickman took the role for the movies. Very very rich character, and generally hard to pidgeonhole.

But big Snape stuff does happen (and JKR does want the reader to think a certain way about Snape, I think, by the end of book 6). :)

12. Personally, I don't think Snape is on any side... |
|
...but his own.
Whether that makes him good or bad is entirely up in the air as of the end of book #6.

14. I say read the books. . . |
|
Cause I'm afraid I give away stuff if I give a definite (Although possibly wrong) answer. :)
Just for the record Snape is my fav character. I watched the first movie before I started reading the books so I think it was watching him be performed by Alan Rickman(Correct spelling) make me like Snape before even reading a page of the books.

18. Snape is probably more important than Harry, or at least as important |
|

The Snape character will be responsible for either the downfall or victory of Voldemort. He is portrayed in the books as a double agent, and we still don't know if it is a double agent for voldemort or dumbledore. Even after the activity in the half blood prince, I think Snape's true allegiance has not yet been revealed.
There are clues to this in the Goblet of Fire book when Voldemort talks about the three living Death Eaters who did not appear in the graveyard when he summoned them. He says "One, too cowardly to return ... he will pay. One, who I believe has left me forever ... he will be killed of course ... and one, who remains my most faithful servant, and who has already reentered my service."
We know that the faithful servant was Crouch in Moody's form. The other two are Snape and Karkaroff. I believe Karkaroff is the one who was too cowardly to return and Snape was the one Voldemort though left him forever. Snape had to take some actions to convince Voldemort that he has not left him forever.
In the next two books (won't spoil it for you) Snape does a few things to earn Voldemort's trust. But you never know if he is playing voldemort or playing dumbledore. She lets it play out so it can go either way. You have to read Order of the Phoenix and Half blood Prince as soon as you can.
In book 7, I think Snape, and another wizard, will be the characters that allow Harry to kill voldemort, but I could be wrong. In the end, snape could prove to be one of the biggest traitors. I don;t want to say any more that may spoil great reading for you.

20. Yup. Of all the adult characters in the Harry Potter universe... |
|
Snape is by far the most complex. May even be the only really complex one.
I'm not making up my mind about him one way or the other - saving it for Year 7.

I'm betting that he's a good guy and I'm hoping for a huge plot twist in the next book that will prove my theory. Good or evil, he's definitely an asshole to Harry...but that will be explained in the next movie.
Read the books. The movies are great but the books are better. Actually, you could start with the Goblet of Fire and continue the series from there since that's when the series really gets dark. It was a big book and unfortunately the movie had to leave a lot of good parts out to keep it from running 4 hours long.

22. My SPOILER thoughts.... |
|
My opinion of what happened at the end of book 6:
**MAJOR SPOILER, only swipe if you don't mind the ending revealed**
Dumbledore knew he was dying and knew of Snape's deal with Malfoy's mother. So, he asked Snape to kill him in order to cover for Snape. Remember, Snape is an accomplished legilimens (sp?) What Snape did was essentially a mercy killing because of the water/poison Dumbledore drank.
Snape is so angry at Harry for continuing to doubt him and for not being enough of a legilimens to pick up on what went on between him and Dumbledore.
**END SPOILER**
