More hate mail! They hate me, they really hate me! |
|
I just had to share this latest piece of hate mail. I'll post the e-mail and then add some comments afterwards. This is a good one!
"I'd really like to know why you are protesting this war in the first place. Are you anti-Iraqi? For thirty years Saddam has been murdering Iraqi's. We stopped that. For thirty years women were not allowed to go to school. Are you ant-women? I am a vet and I am using my name to show you that what I fought for is the rights of people like you to spout ignorant blather about how we freed an entire nation from tyranny just for oil. Are you that blinded by your hate for one man that you can't see the future of the world without terror. Please, continue to rant and rave about how horrible it is to live here and how oppressed you are and how the rich are only getting richer. I beg you to keep up the verbal diarrhea. It really is amusing. How many battles have you fought in? I have fought in 3. I know what it's like to see the look on a man's face who has been afraid for 20 years to even think the garbage you are spouting. It must be nice to be able to tear down other people and bitch and moan about how bad it is here and how much "evil" we are doing around the world. Please, if you'd like to see for yourself take a trip down to Cuba and see how great the people have it there. I'll talk to you when you get back.
Scott L. CPT(ret) 1st Special Forces Group"
This was my response (in an e-mail, I wasn't as nice on my web page): "Dear sir or madam,
Thank you for taking the time to write. I enjoyed your e-mail. I will carefully consider the point(s) that you raised. If you are a veteran, thank you for your service and sacrifice to our country. As a fellow combat veteran, you may not agree with my opinions, but I'm sure you would support my right to free speech, and that I have the right to say anything I want to, even if it's offensive. I fought for your rights, and you fought for mine. And for that, I thank you. God bless America!"
Now, to some points: The letter writer states that I consider this to be a war for oil. And if you look back over my archives, you'll see I never said this was a war for oil. When I mentioned oil, it was when I was talking about Saudi Arabia. So this is clearly a cut-and-paste right-winger form letter they probably all use when they want to send a message to stinkin' liberal traitor, with the letter writer probably giving my site a very quick read. He mentions the class-warfare stuff, again a subject I have not ever mentioned at my site.
The message is a great example of how the right-wing lie. The writer makes assumptions about me which are not even close to the truth. He just ticks off the standard Rove talking-points. If you watch Hannity and Colmes, you'll know that Hannity pretty much nightly says the same stuff that the e-mail writer said to me, whenever he has a liberal guest on that opposes the war.

Iraqi women could go to school. Iraqi women lived in a secular state and were scared to death of living under the same sharia laws that held sway over other Arab nations. Guess what? Now that Iraqi society has fallen apart, Shi'ite factions employ their own thugs to enforce sharia. Women have to cover themselves, can't work professional jobs, have to be escorted by a man everywhere they go and so on.

a vet spouts off about how "unpatriotic" someone is if they disagree with the 'guvmint, and screams that they should go to war themselves or that they were too chicken to do so, then finds out they're talking to another vet? My Vietnam veteran uncle (former marine), just LOVES it when that happens, because he actually served two tours of duty so he can throw it right back at them.

a report that I saw recently regarding whether the Iraqis are better off now than with Saddam (I'm pulling these numbers from my memory).
It is estimated that Saddam was directly resonsible for 300,000 deaths over about 30 years. That comes out to be just short of 30 deaths per day. It is estimated that since Saddam fell, US forces have been responsible for more than 44 deaths per day.
So are they better off ? Not really.
