Anyone else here get allergic reactions to metal?
...those idiot men who changed out my spigots in my bathroom today...that I ranted about earlier...left metal shavings all in my tub...I had to clean up their massive mess they left o' course...now my eyes and lips are swelling and my tongue feels thick too...and a rash on my face...hands and arms....I took an antihistamine but it hasn't kicked in yet....bastardos...so much for going anywhere for my birthday tomorrow now that I look and feel like total crap! If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all it seems...BAH! x(

1. Off subject, but Happy Birthday!
You might be reacting to some adhesives or solvents they left behind. Did you hire these guys or are you a renter? Most reputable contractors clean up after themselves.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

2. Nickel is an allergen. It gets me, but
not like that -- very slowly. Don't let this get out of control. If it doesn't improve real soon, get treatment.

3. Not to Scare You
Hey - what you are experiencing is hives -- and with the tongue thickening it sounds as if you are in the beginning of anaphylactic shock. This can be life threatening (I know, I have to carry an epi-pen, filled with adrenalin).

Please, if you're alone make sure you can call 911 if the antihistimines don't kick in quickly and you're breathing becomes labored.

There's no telling what got to you, I personally am allergic to some metals, mostly have a problem with jewelery (damn the luck).

11. I agree
The tongue thickening and lips swelling is NOT a good sign. This is far more than a mild allergic reaction and requires IMMEDIATE medical attention. Call your doctor, call the ER but do something!

When it is this severe, just taking an antihistamine will not be enough.

9. My partner's allergic to nickel
He can't wear watches unless they have a platinum or plastic back.

He has to get earrings with special studs.

He reacts to bracelets and jewellery unless it's gold or titanium. The slightest contamination with nickel and he breaks out.

He can't wear some brand of jeans because he reacts to the metal button.

22. That's me exactly
I can wear good gold and I had to get titanium eyeglass frames (with, when paired with the cost of my lenses, got REALLY expensive.)

The snap on my jeans caused me to be hospitalized for a while back in college. IT was the first time I had ever seen hydrocortisone and it's since become my best friend.

I have one watch I can wear and one gold necklace. Thankfully, I have some good earrings that don't bother me.

I'm facing knee replacement surgery at some point and I'm afraid of the surgical steel and the staples they use. My doc said it wouldn't be a problem but I'm not sure he understands what happens to me. Rash, itching, oozing...Ewwww

21. I do.
I get welts anyplace I tough any alloy that has Nickel in it. My wife almost killed me with a metal watch once. Strangely enough, it was right after I purchased a new life insurance policy.

Benadryl or other antihistamines have always helped when I have a sever reaction.
