to celebrate his Sexiest Man Alive award! :D
I'm christening my new DVD player with the Criterion edition Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Besides doing an unbelievably dead-on HST, there's a 20 minute interview with JD and he reads faxes/correspondence he and Hunter exchanged during filming.
edit: JFK? I think it's ghoulish to celebrate someone more for their death than the life they led. I prefer to remember him alive and what he wanted to inspire in us. That I believe was his true gift to us. Will we ever find out the truth? I don't know.

Did you ever read the book? It's a modern masterpiece, IMHO.

6. The best documentary I've seen |
|
I think was a serious one done by NOVA 15 years ago called, I think, simply "Who Shot JFK?" They had early computer modeling of Dealey Plaza. In the end everything was still left wide, wide open, but the documentary was done in a very intelligent way and seemed to be mostly without bias. I saw it in High School, and it's what really started my obsession with the assassination and JFK in general.
It's fun to watch the theories swing back and forth like a pendulum from certainty that the Martian invaders did it, to absolute certainty that it was Oswald alone. I think we're back in Oswald territory these day.

though the obsession comes and goes. JFK was before my time, and as such, I didn't deal with the reality of the situation, but in my mind he's tied up with the kinda spiritual rebirth of the 60's-70's, which I also missed. So I can look back on his as an icon of sorts, of the world when it was a better, more wonderful place.
There's a line in My Dinner With Andre, where Andre says, "it may well be that the 60's was the last burst of the human spirit before it was extingushed forever." Somehow that's always stuck with me.
Anyway, if JFK is so wonderful in my mind, then I can say that 40 years ago this Saturday, America died, and it has yet to be reborn. And only by figuring out what happened that day and *why* can we really hope to rebuild our country.
Or at least that's my warped view of it.
In addition, I think it's a really cool mystery with lots of players and tons of shady stuff, and the best part is that it's all REAL, and that an average Joe like me can really decide one day that s/he wants to do research, and the research is there, and Dealey Plaza is there, and tons of photos are there, etc. It's actually lots of fun.
:)
