I haven't been to a Movie Theater since 1993 |
|
Last movie I saw in a theater: Jurassic Park (the first)
Any other DU'ers with this kind of run? (I'm sure there are)

1. "Bowling for Columbine" |
|
That's the last time I've been in a movie theater. I know, that was last year. But I don't like going to theaters anymore.
Expensive. $8 - $10 a ticket in Chicago.
I always seem to sit in front of people who talk throughout the movie.
AND...people STILL haven't seem to have grasped the concept of turning off their cell phones.

I was dragged there by my friends to see "New York, New York".
But I showed them, I fell asleep after ten minutes, and was shushed by the usher for snoring. They never nagged me to see a movie again. :-)

I think it was Back Draft (that fire-fighting film). Ever since the advent of VHS and DVD, why should you bother going to a theater and spending a fortune and putting up with the lines, the crowds, the noisy people and kids when you can sit in the comfort of your own living room and see first-rate movies? I may have to wait a few months from the time they are released, but that's OK because I'm in no hurry. I joined NetFlix. Greatest concept ever for renting films online. It's only $20 and it covers all the movies that you can view in a month, plus no late fees. I'm a cheerleader for this service.

And with HDTV (which I don't have) and Home Theater Systems (have one, 5.1 surround) Who needs a theater?

Not the same picture quality, not the same sound quality, not the same size, not the same collective effect, not the same popcorn

about 20 years after it was released. Most movies, I don't even see that quickly.

Sorry to yell, but as a filmmaker I make my movies to be seen with other people. Movies are supposed to be a social experience. I am not saying that people should talk through a film, but that groups experience emotions differently than an individual sitting in a lighted room ,without the large screen and surround sound. Sitting in a house doesn't give you the same concentration that you get when you go to the movies.
I don't mean to rant, but I have spent a lot of time studying how people react to things and I get irritated when I hear how people purposefully cut themselves off from what can, and should, be a meaningful experience, just because they have had a couple of bad ones. Yes, there are many bad films, and yes, there are many bad audiences, but there are also many good ones, and you should be able to have a good time.
Also, a hint. If you are going to go see a movie at full price, then try going the opening weekend (or opening day if you can manage it)...the people in the audience tend to be people who really want to see the film, not hang out with each other.

I loved the movie, but I lost it when the wolf was shot.
I don't watch TV, either. Just not my thing.

on its original run (early 80's I guess). I took my kids to see it. They now have kids of their own. There's just no attraction in it for me.
