Poll question: Worst Star Trek Film |
|
Don't get me wrong. I love Star Trek. Original, STNG, Voyager, DS9, and I can even sort of tolerate Enterprise. Which of the flix blew the most?

even going to see them after Kirk's death.
Incidentally, he is resurrected in the books.
I have most of the books ever written on it, but refuse to buy any of the new series Enterprise.

2. Nemesis, by a landslide |
|
Some others were in the "not so good" category, but nemesis is the only truly cliche poorly written saccharine idiotic piece of shit in the bunch. It's like a bad 80s movie, like Ice Pirates.
Nemesis is pure fecal matter.

3. Which is the one with "God" in it? |
|
Is that V? That sucks the worst.
I just saw 'Nemesis' recently. Wasn't as bad as I thought.

6. I thought Nemesis was lousy, myself... |
|
I used to be completely addicted to Star Trek. The thing is, like a drug addiction, a Star Trek addiction ceases to be fun after awhile, but it's still necessary to feed the addiction.
However...once Enterprise came out, I went to "detox" and now I'm done.

Nemesis wasn't that bad at all. I mean, yeah, I had low expectations going in, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was actually an enjoyable time at the movies.

8. It has no right calling itself a Star Trek movie |
|
it sucked. I have rarely ever been so disappointed upon leaving a movie. I was somewhat disappointed in First Contact, another cliche-ridden piece of shit, but Nemesis really plumbed the depths of shit.

Damn the potential constitutional amendment, marry me! :D
FC is all cliches, bad jokes, and Picard being hardly the noble and honorable man, especially when his crew saved him when he was Borgified 6 years prior... all he does is shoot people, saying he's doing them a favor (what, Picard is now a republican?!) Not to forget in-jokes from half the cast of Voyager... :eyes:

14. And I noticed you trashed Nemesis! |
|
Woo hooo!!!
Nemesis was just plain all around shit.
First Contact was, for lack of a better term, insipid pootish unclever shit.
Nemesis was just plain shit writing.
First Contact was shit writing that thought it was clever because it was written in a theoretically clever teenage-ish cliche way, like Van Halen lyrics and music. Interesting, maybe even exdciting, but devoid of content, and sometimes almost painful to listen to just because of it's lack of luster and panache. First Contact seems like something that would be of interest and exciting to a teenager or other less-educated person (meaning no offense to intelligent DU teenagers who are obviously above this), especially that "Assimilate This!" line.
But at least First Contact had a point.
Nemesis was just out and out shit. All the way around, except that it was filmed in focus, I'll give it that, and Stewart always does a great job, no matter how poorly he is intructed to act.
I can see what I want to say, but I'm having a hard time finding the words to describe what I mean between the two.
Oh - I just had a thought - First Contact is the kind of stupid cliche ridden BS like Top Gun or Love Story or any Ron Howard film or a lot of TV shows - all shiny and sparkly, but shit. Nemesis is like a Klingon turd floating in a Vulcan pon farr's ceremonial punch bowl. It think it's a clever witticism, but it's just inappropriately laid shit.
I kind of liked Insurrection, though it was rather farfetched, and Generations was pretty cool.
(I'm kinda pleased with that punchbowl metaphor)

20. I totally disagree... |
|
I think First Contact is my favorite ST movie, although I'm a WAY bigger TOS fan. Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home are my #2 and #3. I think the rest are all pretty much mediocre (well, Search for Spock was pretty good) films. Final Frontier and Nemesis are totally suck-ass.

Cliches? Sure. Don't they ALL have 'em? Now Final Frontier, that one just sucked. Large. Except for the line, "Uh, excuse me, but why does God need a star ship?"

22. Nemesis had cast a lousy villain |
|
Indeed, Nemesis had a bad nemesis. Never mind the plot, which was okay but not great. The villain was just such a weenie. He failed to be intimidating or threatening, and failed to remind me of a young Picard. But the film was still enjoyable. Worth the $3.95 it cost on pay per view.

23. I paid $5.50 at the theater |
|
Edited on Sat Jul-26-03 10:59 AM by Rabrrrrrr
at a matinee, thank God I didn't pay full price, and felt that was a totally wasted $5.50, except not entirely wasted since, had I not seen the movie, I would still desire to see it, so I had to spend money on it somehow because not seeing it would have killed me eventually.
Still, we should be able to call up Spiner and the other writer and demand our money back.
on edit: total agreement on the weenie-ness of the villain idiot.

9. Trek V was admittedly crap, but at least |
|
it felt like a normal Trek adventure in terms of the characterizations of "the big three" and actually tried to be an adventure.
"Nemesis" was just a Data-centric story ripping off lines and scenes from Star Trek II and III along the way. :eyes: I'm actually quite surprised Shinzon didn't say about Picard "He tasks me and I shall have him".
Trek V did't screw up continuity or charcater concept, Nemesis DID. (most obviously, Troi having new powers of telepathy... Data had an emotion chip that was fused and could NOT be removed but he somehow managed to remove it by this movie, apparently, and without the dignity of an explanation either... And writer John Logan claims to be a fan of the show yet alone a good writer?!?)
Trek V tried adding character continuity/subplots (Scotty/Uhura possible relationship, which I thought was mega-cool). Nemesis did squat, unless it was about Data and B4 or whatever the joke android was called.
Trek V is silly with its humor, Nemesis is simply pompous.
As enemies go, the God impersonator was rather scary, though predictable. Shinzon can be summed up by a clever euphemism: "Shitzon".
Trek V's second half improved immensely, whereas Nemesis just kept going and going and going in the most dreary way possible, with no end in sight.
Trek V resorted to bad humor at the demand of Paramount, the clueless network. Nemesis was funny, but not the ha-ha kind of funny.

12. There is no question here... |
|
Star Trek V was the worst piece of crap every put on celluloid. Nemesis could have been better, and Kirk's death was mad lame, but none of them independently, nor all of the worst portions of all the movies collectively could equal the suckitude that is V!

13. For me it was definitely Insurrection |
|
Bought the DVD though, so my collection would be complete. So many annoying things in it. The little furby critter, the phoney-baloney idyllic-pastoral lifestyle of the inhabitants of the village which looked like some yoga retreat spa for celebrities, and only looked like it had enough room for maybe 30 residents. The cheesy pop-philosophy about stopping time or whatever. Even the preview was asinine: "What if there was a place where time had no meaning, blah blah blah, and what if that place was threatened blah blah"
I really couldn't have cared less whether they removed the pampered-looking residents of that fake-looking town. Nothing in the whole film made any sense to me. I also hate it when they have data pick up a rifle and say with conviction "Lock and Load" - like, wow, Data's a badass now, whoopty-doo. I felt like this whole flick was a metaphor for "What if the pampered, beautiful residents of Malibu colony were forced to move out to where they could no longer maintain their youth and beauty only to be replaced by ugly rabble?"
This kind of storyline must have a visceral impact for H'wood producers, but it means nothing to a guy like me, living in the real world.

15. They're pretty much a blur to me except IV |
|
That was the one with the whales, right? IV was the best. I didn't think that they could surpass the numbing boredom of I until I saw V. I don't remember much about it except that it was stupid. Ebert & Siskel used to say that the even-numbered ones were good, the odds, bad.

|
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 05:41 PM by Rabrrrrrr
but I don't understand why people diss Star Trek V so much - sure, it wasn't glorious, but I thought, overall, it was sufficiently Star Trek and fits well within the canon, though it certainly could have been written better. The story was right on and there; it just was not executed so well, that's all. But I always thought it was a cool movie.

I gave up round about the 2nd season of Voyager and have not seen even a second of Enterprise. Is it as bad as I fear it must be? Also, y'all might be amused by the Spock's Brain Awards: http://www.plaidder.com/spocks.htmAn old poll, but a good one. C ya, The Plaid Adder

it started weak, but improved. So did DS9 (whose last 3 seasons, IMHO, was some of the best trek ever written) I keep hoping Enterprise will improve also.

19. Only Trek gets three or four years to develop characters. |
|
After that, if we're lucky, we get about three years' worth of decent episodes, the same as the original series.

TNG, DS9, Voyager were dreadful for the first couple of seasons....TNG redid (badly) every original plot I think...even threw in that 'Alien' movie, and generally sucked.
Then about the time Riker grew his beard...they seemed to find themselves and had some great shows. Every now and then a clunker (the annual orgy)but on the whole....good.
DS9 started out great...then seemed to get lost for awhile...and they had no idea what to do with Kira...I liked her at first...tough, uncompromising, totally Bajoran...so of course they softened her up into a stereotype of a human female. Sigh.
And they made a strong black human leader...into some kind of mystical Bajoran religious figure. Sigh again.
Same problem with Voyager...kee-ripes..the captain and Tom as mating lizards...yuck yuck patooie!
And much of the time Janeway was on the verge of tears, and worried far too much about the prime directive. FINALLY she learned to kick butt. THEN it worked.
I was interested in the TIME section of Starfleet which came in at the last, and was hoping they'd do something with that, but no luck.
I can see humans on TV anytime...so I like Vulcans to be Vulcan, Bajorans to be Bajoran, and androids to be android.
They lose me entirely when they 'become human'

Why, in the TNG cast movies, does everyone wear those gray jackets over their more colorful uniforms? Does it get colder in space during a movie?
