Anyone ever quit a good-paying job to go to school full time?

That's what I'm intending to do in the fall, and that's the part that I'm nervous about.

I'll be going from a good-paying editor job, with benefits, to zero income (and I'll have to pay for whatever crappy insurance I can get through the school or the American Bar Association's student program). First-year law students can't work at many law schools. I'll have loans, I'm sure (and loans can be used for living expenses as well as tuition); and I hope to have at least some scholarship $, but point is, I'll be broke for at least a year, and it'll be super-tight for two years after that (when I can have some summer and part-time school-year employment).

Most people who go to law school full time go right from college, or have only been in the workforce for a year or two, so it's not a massive adjustment. I'm 30, I've been married, I've owned a house. I have pets, and a boyfriend with a kid (with whom I will likely be living, come spring).

Am I nuts? Anyone else have a similar experience and care to share?

1. I just left a decent job, and am now without a traditional income.

I'm in school also. In fact, the first session just ended for me.

I've got savings, etc. to live on for the time being, and I'll most likely have a decent temporary job through June of next year starting soon. After that I'll be finished with most of my school and ready to make whatever move comes next.

Worried? Not so much right now, but if I'm still here in a year, I'll be pretty hard into freak out mode.

I forgot to mention that I'm not really a full-time student.

It's really part-time. Also, the timing of my departure from my job wasn't entirely of my own choice, but really, it's working out for the best.

Three years? Yikes.

A friend of mine did exactly what you're doing. She came through it just fine and is now a practicing attorney.

I just don't see where grad school would do anything for me. No desire to be a lawyer or to have an MBA.

4. My (now ex-)GF did basically the same thing you're doing

I still have no idea why.

At the rate she was earning at her job, she would have been making just as much as a first-year lawyer three years down the line. She also wouldn't have been $150K in debt and wouldn't be working 80-90 hours a week.

I'm a little biased, though. I work at a law firm and can't imagine why anyone would want to be a lawyer.
