Who else re-arranges the PolSci section in Bookstores???!!!
I posted on one of Cororose's thread about one thing I like to do when I want to spend an inexpensive night with just myself - going to bookstores like Borders or B&N. I'll check out the books I would like to buy, read books I would never spend a penny buying and of course my favorite hobby - rearranging the PoliSci section of books. At both stores they usually have a selection of books on promiment display on the ends of the shelving. I've swapped or cover right-wing books with some of my favorites, gone back and they're still there. Or I'll do things like put "Blinded by the Right" on top of an Ann Coulter pile. Or "Big Lies" on top of something that Bush has written.

I know one other person at DU said they also do this - is anyone have this interesting little hobby???

1. I'll cop to a little bit of "rearranging".
I usually just turn over Anthrax's books, or shelve them backwards, or some such. I'll also put Franken's or Conason's books in front of O'Lielly,et al. I haven't switched covers or anything, but there's always next time. :)

3. I had to laugh when I read this....
I knew I couldn't be the only person who was moved to do it. About three weeks ago I went to Borders looking for David Corn's "The Lies of George W. Bush." The book had recently come out and I just knew it wouldn't be prominently displayed on Border's front tables, it wasn't. Surprisingly though, it was displayed on the end cap back in the poliSci section.

I just knew what needed to be done. I scooped up four copies and carried them to the front and put them right in the center on the low part of the table. If you were looking at the titles when you walked through the door you couldn't have missed it. I took one copy and went and got a cup of coffee and sat watching the door and reading.

It was a most rewarding experience. And I'd do it again too. Glad to hear I'm not alone.

4. I do.
When Will's book 'Target:Iraq - What the Bush Administration Doesn't Want You To Know' was published, I looked all over the store (Borders) for it. Turns out, they were keeping it crated up and only bringing out single copies when it was requested. I complained to the store manager, who actually put the stock on the shelves, whereupon, I took ten or eleven of them and put them on the display shelf up front, where everyone could see it.

Same with 'Silence is the Greatest Sedition'.

7. When I couldn't find Will's Iraq book, I too asked the manager at Borders
he promptly walked me to the cash register where they had them on display next to the register.

I even have a witness. When RBNYC went with me to DC, we stopped by that Borders just so I could show her where Will's books were being displayed.

Can't get better advertising than that!!!

8. You all are just making work for those of us that have to put them back...
That being said, go on with your bad selves. The RWers do it to Hillary, Bill, Al and everyone else.

Book design award goes to "Living History". When the wingnuts turn it over to hide Hillary's cover portrait, they display the collage of a dozen or more photos of her and Bill. Hilarious! :D

10. Another idea.
Yea, I do the same thing. Thinking about it, however, makes me wonder about putting together a punchy little "bookmark" with some under-reported Bush facts (AWOL, condemning properties for the baseball stadium, etc), and then slipping them in the RW books. Most will just get discarded by the buyer, but perhaps a few might plant some seeds.

Something to think about.

14. Please don't
I worked at a B&N for 4 years, and I can tell you a few things.

One, lots of right-wing morans DO come in looking for the latest screed by their favorite talk show hosts. Despite the "dagger" bulk orders, they still sell lots to individuals. So hiding their books just makes the wingnut customers aggravate the poor soul working the floors and cash registers (for not much above minimum wage) with their whiny request for Coulter/Hannity/O'Reilly/Newt's new piece of crap. They will even make snide remarks and try to engage you in political chitchat, which the employees are not supposed to do. It was hard enough holding my tongue when they came to the register with their piece of crap, so imagine trying NOT to correct them on their moranic comments about Hillary's "It Takes A Village" book.

Two, all of the endcaps and table displays are pre-ordained from the home office, so when you re-arrange the books, you create more work for the employees. Thanks! The regular shelves are supposed to stay in order too. Don't mess with them!

Three, re-arranging the books isn't going to change anyone's mind, or make the wingers buy a left-wing book. It may makes you feel good for a while, but ultimately, you are affecting the wage slave behind the counter more than the RW'er customer.

It's a silly, immature practice, and I urge all of you to stop, if you truly care about your working brothers and sisters in retail.

15. But hun - it feels soooooooooooooo good
I don't change covers. And I've spent 4 years in retail (Victoria's Secret - believe me, my stories are worse than political chit-chat with Right Wing Morans!!!!). Anyhow - they do it too!!!

16. I know they do
So BOTH sides drove me nuts! :P Don't think I wasn't tempted, as an employee, to hide the Newt book behind the Hillary book (This was the mid-90's). Even today, I have to avert my gaze from Coulter! :o

Hmmmm... Victoria's Secret??? You could create quite a good thread about those experiences! :D

19. I wish I could say a Tara Banks look-a-like asked me to do bra measurement
HOWEVER.......

we're talking more like someone's grandmother needing help with bra purchases.

Believe me - working for Victoria Secrets was NOTHING like those one hour TV commericials with the VS fashion show - no where close. I'd rather clean up after the political books re-arrange any day of the week.

18. What he said...
Good one, ZombyWoof.

And although I don't like to have to reshelve everything, here in RW hell there's a lot more wingnut abuse of liberal books than vice-versa.

And you're right -- everyone should know that what's on the table or endcap is beyond the control of the local store and its mangement and employees. Your reshelves probably do not last even as long as it takes you to leave the store.

17. More fun - I put a pair of labels with anti-GOP facts into two of
Annthrax's books in a local library (one label each).

You'd figure, if a RWer is borrowing the book, they'd see that on the inside cover and do something about it.

So far, (and this was well before the war started), the labels are there, UNMOLESTED.

Guess the freepers can't read. The Target store nearby has been very prominent in their display of RW bestsellers, with "Top 10" RW books prominently displayed in the Top Ten rack, and the non-RW books from the top 10 prominently displayed, er, um, I'm not sure.

BTW, Parma Regional branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Ohio.

ALWAYS does it (especially to Ann Coulter books)! I tell her frequently that she will be a force to be reckoned with. (She kind of already is though.)

27. C# and C++
Grrr, this so bugs me when I see these books all interfiled together in the same section. I'm very tempted to take half and hour and totally reorganize this section.

Also really hate how most computer programming languages have their own section but to find a book on perl you have to go to the Unix section.

Grrr.
