"I am sick and tired of the 'Katrinas'" - OMFG, read this trash
a cow-irker's rant about the number of charitable appeals we've rec'd in the last 2-3 weeks

"I am sick and tired of the 'katrinas', sorry - time to move on. waaay to much fraud and waay to much money for folks who didnt have crap to start with."

1. jesus, it gets better
here's the thread so far:

my response to the above: "too much money for folks who didn't have crap to begin with? if the money is available, we should still just return everyone to the level of poverty from which they were flooded out?"

her answer: "sounds like a plan to me!"

my response: "Why? And do what with what the money leftover -- do what with the money that could've given them a leg up? Remember, this is charitable donations, not taxes."

her answer: "a leg up? what makes you think that most of those really poor would be productive after being given a wad of money?"

my response: "What makes you think they wouldn't? Some of them would do well. Those "some" aren't worth the attempt? -- And again - do what w/ the leftover charitable donations?"

her answer: "pay back social security."

my response: "Not with my donations. No way. My money is for people in need NOW. And again - those "some" aren't worth the attempt?"

No answer so far. Been about 5 minutes.

9. oh, yeah. and then we got on used clothing for the homeless.
I said the last two drives have cleaned me out of good used clothes, so this weekend I'll go shopping for stuff. She wrote back "you'll BUY stuff to GIVE AWAY?"

Some people just don't get it.

3. Arguing with these cows is like teaching a pig to sing
doesn't accomplish anything, and annoys the pig.

(cow-irkers secret thought: "boo hoo! no one pays that much attention to ME! No one is giving ME anything!)

I bet this person is a "Christian" -- if you get a chance to ask -- why not ask them "What would Jesus do?"

10. What an asshole your coworker is.
She's right about the fraud part, but these people still deserve some basic human dignity. There has been an awful lot of money donated with very little ending up with the victims, but they still deserve help for what they have been through. It's basic compassion to care. How can she be so cold, especially during the holidays?

13. How can she be so cold?
She is who she is. I don't know what has made her like this. She lost her father, brother (to suicide), and mother in the last five years, and after her mother's death is the only time I've ever seen her the slightest bit vulnerable. But as soon as I tried to offer what solace I was capable of -- which, considering her person, was not easy -- I got the nasty woman again.

It's said that every human being has some worth. With her and my ex-BIL, I struggle mightily to believe it.

14. But if Al Qaida had flooded New Orleans...
...These same folks would be banging the drums of fundraising, patriotism, Americans-coming-together-under-adversityism, etc.

But because it was "an act of God", the poor of NO basically deserved it, and shouldn't be helped even if the resources are there.

20. What can we expect?
When our own elected officials consider the people of NO scum, why wouldn't the general public? I read a quote by one in Mother Jones the other day that was abominable. I don't have the magazine with me and can't find it online so I'll have to get the exact quote tomorrow. However the paraphrase is: "What we couldn't do to get rid of public housing in New Orleans God did for us".

People like that should not be in our government.

22. An elected official said that?
Good lord.

Funny — earlier today, for some reason I thought of when the mayor of Houston several years ago was caught on camera saying one solution to the AIDS crisis was to "shoot the queers." :grr:

(Appropriately, he either resigned soon afterward or was not re-elected; I don't remember which.)

24. Just as sad, I think
if not sadder — their constituents can't be completely unaware they have these attitudes, so you have to conclude that a lot of people agree with them. Otherwise, they wouldn't get elected.

I can understand ignorance; can't abide it, but I can understand it. I cannot understand willful ignorance, though, and I certainly can't understand out-and-out hatred based on race, etc.

We've got so much work to do...

25. Just from reading the OP, and from years of experience
I know such attitudes are rampant. "Poor people are just lazy", "AIDS victims deserve what they get", "All Muslims are terrorists", "Gays are sex maniacs who want to molest children", etc. And too many of these people just refuse to open their eyes to the possibility that their opinion is wrong.

26. Yeah, and that's the thing I can't abide
It's one thing if someone is misinformed. It's quite another if they refuse to consider other facts or views. And that goes for anyone, regardless of political affiliation.

That, more than anything else, makes me bang my head against the nearest wall.

27. Same here
I hate trying to debate with someone whose basic tactic is to scream over you, do the "broken record" routine, or essentially plug their ears and shout "la la la la I can't hear you". Then when you give up out of utter frustration they proclaim themselves victors. :banghead:

32. Here's the quote!
Overheard by the Wall Street Journal explaining to lobbyists right after Hurricane Katrina had destroyed New Orleans--"We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it but God did." Rep. Richard Baker, (R-Louisiana)

30. Has anyone heard a "Katrina" song that's going around in e-mails?
Somebody sent my husband an e-mail yesterday that contained the link to a song recording. It was set to the tune of something familiar, I can't place the tune and don't even want to... from some old TV show, I think. Anyway... the lyrics were disgusting. It was all about how the people in New Orleans were looting TVs & jewelry, shitting in the Superdome and in the streets, raping and pillaging, shooting at the rescuing helicopters, and blaming George Bush and the head of FEMA for "not getting their sorry asses out of there". !!! And the song was meant to be funny!!!

Obviously, it was done by people on the radical right. I don't know the name of the "song" or anything else, I just heard it play once and left the room in disgust before it ended.

It sickens me that there are people who find the situation "humorous", and even go so far as to record a song that hits just about every stereotyped, overhyped, mis-reported right-wing talking point that ever surfaced during the hurricane's aftermath. What sickens me even more is that there is probably an audience for it out there that thinks it's the truth, and loves it. :puke:
