my run-in with girlscout mom
i dropped off a prescription at the local pharmacy this afternoon and had to pass 6-7 girlscouts selling cookies in the foyer of the store, chaperoned by a mom. they asked me-and i use the word loosely it was more of an ambush- to buy cookies which i declined with a pleasant "no thanks, girls" and went about my business.

an hour later, i return to pick up my prescription and they're still there. again they jump up to shill cookies and the mom tells them, "leave him alone girls he was here earlier and said no." i walked in and was about 20' away when i hear the mom turn to the girls and say "he's just unamerican, that's all." i couldn't believe i heard that and turned to face her. she looked at me with a challenging look, but i am a master of the intimidating glare so she immediately turned away and didn't make eye contact again.

i picked up my stuff and left and tried to make eye contact again, but she wanted none of it. i was tempted to give her shit and embarrass her in front of the little capitalists, but decided that was unwarranted and i would never convince anyone i was right if the situation escalated so i let it go.

1. I can't believe she even twisted her mouth to say such a thing.
Good grief...imagine what she is teaching the children...I would complain to the local Girl Scout council about her...Seriously.

9. Agree totally.
And this is coming from a 20 year Girl Scout leader, trainer, service unit chair and Thanks Badge recipient. That woman should NOT be permitted to handle anything and especially not cookie sales.

2. Those lucky children
Getting an early lesson in Corporate greed and smear tactics all at the same time. Kind of warms the cockles of your heart, doesn't it?

5. I really hate it when groups selling cookies, doughnuts, etc. are allowed
to solicit you before you walk into the store. Right in front of the door.

I mean, there's no way around it, they are going to ask you. Of course I can say no (and always do on principle) but still, something about it strikes me as crass.

6. Call the local Girl Scout Assoc.
They should never teach the kids behavior like that. They are supposed to teach them to be good citizens not good little brown shirts.

Seriously, these leaders can have a lot of influence over their little groups of girls and this, as you know, is reprehensible behavior.

I'm a GS leader in my area. We are not supposed to display any type of behavior like that during cookie sales. They actually give us a lecture on unacceptable behavior.
I can find out who runs the local council in your area. Call her up and tell her what you encountered.

(on edit: pulled up the site for Scouting nationwide. This is the page for the council finder. Many councils don't even allow their girls to peddle cookies in front of businesses. She might not have had permission to do so. Good idea to report it.)

10. Please allow me to pile on and implore you to report this.
That woman should not be leading a troop if that's how she's going to mentor those girls.
