Since when are 80's tunes "oldies?" |
|
In this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=4393055&mesg_id=439305580's tunes are called "oldies." What does that make 60's Beatles tunes? 50's doo-wop? The tunes recorded here? www.tinfoil.com Classical music?

It's the March of Time, man. All that great music we grew up listening to is now "Oldies." Scary, huh?

2. About 15 years ago I joked that '80s music would soon enough be on the |
|
dedicated 'oldies' stations that were then proliferating (most of them playing way more '60s than anything else, especially from the '70s). About ten years ago, when flipping through stations on long drives, I began to hear DJs say horrifying things like "here's an oldie from....Madonna!"
Now I fear that the time has come, in earnest. :-(
I'm vastly less concerned about the aging aspect than by my experience suggesting that commercially-viable popular music generally took a sharp nosedive in the '80s that continues spiralling downward to this day.

8. Can't say when they formed |
|
but they most certainly were a mainstay of '80's hair metal.

"Oldies" are fifties and some sixties. It might depend on the style.
Some sixties are "Psychedelic." "Beatles" is Beatles music, except that some Beatles music is "Psychedelic."
Seventies music can be "Rock" "Progressive Rock" "Top 40 Rock" "Disco" or "Album Oriented Rock."
Some seventies music can also be "Punk Rock" (look into it).
Some eighties music can be "White Punks On Dope" or "Disco" or "Techno-Rock" or "Post-Punk" or "Alternative."
Some Nineties music can be "Post-Punk" or "Alternative" or "Grunge" or "Crap."
At this time, I refuse to address the issue of "2000's Music" BECAUSE LABELS DON'T MEAN JACK SHIT ANY MORE.
In my personal opinion, "Rock 'n Roll" reached it's peak in the seventies and is a dying art. However, in reality, it is still a young art form and I will not make any final judgments.
