I'm devasted and I can't stop crying.
The veterinarian couldn't find anything wrong with my kitty Benny on the preliminary probe. He took X-rays and found a large needle in his esophagus that is working it's way into his lungs and there is a big infection. They can't operate on him until tomorrow morning and he doesn't know if he'll pull through. I just lost my other cat to coyotes last July and now this. I'm devasted and I'm sorry if I'm dumping on you here at DU but I have to let this out somehow.

I have to go now. I feel terrible.

11. Why can't they operate????
That doesn't make any sense. First off, if the ingestion is life threatening, and they can't do the surgery, they should recommend another vet to take the kitty to. Second, what kind of vet waits until the weekend to perform life-saving surgery?

12. Really sorry
we have lost two of our "adopted" cats, not really ours but cats that visited us frequently from our neighbors. They have disappeared within the last few weeks-the owner of one said he saw a fisher kill his cat and is going up and down the road warning other cat owners of the fisher.

I have seen a fisher

running across my field a couple of times already. The other suspects that his cat was also caught by a fisher :-(

-we saw a coyote last spring, chase the same cat once and the cat took cover under one of our opulent fosythia bushes-- we ran out and chased the coyote away. Both cats are now disappeared. That is the way of nature.

Sorry--I love pets and animals myself.

We've lost several field cats that were kind of communually "owned" by the neighbors. We try not to think that something happened to them when they stop coming around, but we know.

22. It was a sewing needle, but the vet says it was pretty big.
I wonder if someone is putting out some of their homemade gopher remedies and Benny got hold of it instead. Isn't that a way some people try to kill varmints by putting out food with ground glass or needles in them? Or maybe he got hold of a dead rodent or bird that had swallowed this. I just don't have anything like needles out where he can get them. I am really puzzled.

23. Maybe, a needle was hanging a little out
of the sewing box, or maybe when you opened it a needle fell out. I caught my son's 1-year-old kitten once just in time. Somehow she found a needle with thread on it. When I saw her, just the needle was hanging out of her mouth. I grabbed her and pulled out about 18 inches of thread that she had swallowed.

I hope your kitty pulls through. The fur kids are so important to us.

24. I am so very sorry to hear about Benny; but if I were a betting man,
I would put money on his pulling through -- I've had cats all my life, and they are resilient little buggers.

One of my cats, Dobbs (a rescue) is an amputee -- I was told that he received an animal bite on his left rear leg as a kitten, went for days without food/water, had a severely infected leg/hip. Our vet said that Dobbs had to meet him halfway to survive, which he did.

I will keep you and Benny in my thoughts. Let us know what develops.

Hang in there, Cleita -- :hi:

30. All Coyotes must die!
I am trying a new method this weekend. A rabbit distress call and a red spotlight. When they come to investigate the rabbit call you flip on the spot-light and they will run right towards you. I believe I will have to use my semi-auto shotgun on this attempt. I have new pups I want to let outside but until the coy-dogs are killed I can't.
I hope all goes well for your friend, it sounds serious but you have to have faith. I will say a few words tonight for Benny.

and sending healing thoughts his way. I fought a tough fight with my cat, Milton Friedman, against a terrible pulmonary condition. Take care of yourself at this scary time for you.

How very scary for Benny, and for you. You will both be in my prayers.

Am currently going through an 'unknown' and delibitating situation with my dog - but she seems to be stabilizing (though not well.) You have my empathy/concern. While you go through the terrible wait - just keep holding her, loving her and sharing that loving connection/bond. That will give her great comfort (and give you some comfort as well.)

38. Update on the Benny.
I just came back from the vets after being there for a couple of hours. There were so many emergencies that came in late today, that they pulled in another vet and some assistants to cope. Since he got a crew together he's operating on Benny now and I will meet him after the surgery tonight at the animal emergency clinic, where they will keep him overnight so they can observe him. I'm so hoping everything will be all right.

I was able to visit with Benny and he seemed like he was hanging in there, even trying to purr and wash his paws. He is being well cared for so I feel a little better.

44. I hope he pulls thru OK.
Aside from the reasons the crew had to gather, it's good that Benny got the operation tonite. Animals can recover from the strangest things; my collie mix had a hole slightly larger than a quarter on her chest. We could only speculate that she had rammed into a very sharp stick, because there was no sign that she had been shot. Freaked me out, especially when the vet didn't even put a bandage on it, said it would heal better without one! Well anyway, hope Benny gets to come home soon!

and nearly always come through the surgery with flying colors! If no major organs have been perforated, Benny will be fine. A week or so with antibiotics, pain meds, and lots of love, and you will be able to laugh about it later. Keeping my fingers crossed!

51. Another Benny update.
He's out of surgery and in the hands of an overnight emergency clinic. I met his vet at the emergency clinic who personally brought him there from his office. He had him in surgery for over two hours. I spoke to the emergency vet, a very nice woman, and I am confident that he is in good hands. He's pretty stoned right now on kitty downers, but he recognized me and I said good night to him.

He will be watched and may be able to come home as early as Sunday. The needle punctured his lung and there was an infection but the vet decided not to remove part of his lung. They started a culture so they can identify the infection. So it's a matter of him healing himself now. Thanks everyone for their prayers. Now I have to go to bed.

Two years ago, my 14-year-old cat had a punctured lung. We really thought it was "IT" because of her age and other health problems. Well, she's still going strong at 16 after the surgery and meds, so I know that your little baby can too.

I was a complete wreck during the whole ordeal - I must have cried 20 gallons of tears. So I can really relate to what you're going through, and you have my best wishes and prayers. :grouphug:

65. Go, Benny! I have faith in kitty recovery
Cats recover so fast sometimes that it's unbelievable. After my guy had his hip joint resectioned, he was up and walking around THE SAME DAY. Resilient little buggers. Go, Benny, Go!

63. Our cat...
Swallowed a needle and thread when we got her. We were terrified when the vet told us that it had pierced the wall of the intestine and suggested we put her down.

We didn't. 14 years later she's still cranky and ornery and we love her to bits.

I hope that you and your kitten get to spend as much love time as we have with ours!

67. I am so sorry! Why can't they operate now?
It sure sounds like an emergency to me. I also have animals, and have suffered recent losses, so I know how helpless you are feeling. Please know that I will be sending positive thoughts to Benny and to you and that I care.;(

68. It is hard, I'm sorry.
Before I had an animal I had no idea how much one cares.
