Poll question: How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?
I have no clue who the hell my neighbors are. And I've lived next to them for 10 years.

1. My next door neighbor, Max
is a old goat that has a feud with my family for years... so I know him, but he's not well-liked.

The other next door neighbor - I don't know them that well.

24. It's not so bad...
I hardly see them outside...makes me wonder...!

But it really doesn't matter...houses in my neighborhood go up for sale almost everyday...people losing thier jobs and can't afford it...

So neighbors usually are not around very long...

7. Michael and I had the neighborhood over for Christmas last year,
Jim and Lorraine are retired, babysit our dog all day and bring us food. He replumbed our house for free last year. Mary Jane is an 83 year old Episcopalian artist who has us over for beer occasionally, Bill and Sandy are mid-40's, drink a little beer and ride his motorcycle. Manny and Barbara are in their 50's and lots of fun-when you get a chance to see them. Finally, Miss Sadie died last month at the age of 92. She gave us daylillies once. We haven't met the new guys yet but I know her family.

And Michael and I are gay men in a long term relationship. Small town southern living at its best.

10. Before I moved from Michigan,
I was really good friends with my neighbors. We hung out, drank, and went camping. Now, my landlord lives on on side and I don't know the people on the other side. It's in the country and they are really far away so you can scream REALLY loud and no one can hear you!

11. Few neighbors
Jerry is up the road about a half-3/4 of a mile away, he is ok and a nice guy. He is raising chickens and goats- nice little set-up. Floyd owns the farm across the road, 190 acres. He is so anti-government that he will only take a job if its under the table and short term. He doesn't live on the this farm, he has another place where he stays.
Floyd has helped me with things I really didn't want help with- but in order to be friendly I let him. ( I think he just wants someone to talk to). I can see no structures or lights from my property- so I have good neighbors. I could stand out by my mailbox naked without any fear......

I love country living.

12. My next door neighbour
phoned me during my evening meal to tell me about the operation she'd had on her ovarian cysts.

The word "burst" was used.

Maybe she's just lonely, or gregarious, but I can't help feeling a line was crossed that night.

13. Too damn well
At least the guy across the street. Nice enough guy, and I can take him in short bursts. He's one of those people that have to tell you his life story when you meet him. Supposedly he's done some ultimate fighting, has had problems with the cops (never his fault of course), etc. I made the mistake of loaning him 50 bucks (got it back), and now I'm his best friend. He also doesn't bathe that regularly so I don't like having him in my house for too long. We're pretty much opposites in how we interact with the neighborhood - when I'm home, my doors are shut, and blinds are down because I like my private time. His garage door and the door going into the house are always open so that he can come out and talk with anyone available. I always hit the garage door button as far away as possible so I can get into my house quick enough to avoid a half hour jaw session. :)

Not that I'm anti-social (I hope), but I really like my private time. I hope to eventually buy a house out in the country with the nearest neighbor a mile or two away. :)

15. You would love it here!
I have no neighbors to speak of- see above post. I also have a gate at the road which is closed 24/7- if you want to interupt my quiet time you are gonna have to walk 400 yards. Country livin is for you if you enjoy your privacy!

14. They're mostly quite nice people
but I'm something of a hermit, and I have very little common ground with most of them. Most are elderly, conservative, and very religious, or else younger folks with lots of kids who are very religious. Either way, we wave hi, tell each other if we leave headlights on, watch each other's houses and take each other misdelivered mail, but we're not part of the neighborhood social scene. Our neighborhood is fairly social too, lots of potlucks and taking each other cookies and such. I'm civil but don't really want to get to the point of more than chit-chat. A couple are DREADFUL gossips, so I can only imagine what they're saying about me.

My husband's friendlier to them than I am. I've always preferred to be a trifle standoffish, as I dislike having people come into my yard or house. It's my sanctuary.

for me to shut down my laboratory and leash the monster. All their angry faces in the torch light were quite lovely.

17. Depends on which neighbor.
One I know well, and am on very friendly terms with. Another one I know well, but our employment precludes us associating closely. We're friendly, but not buddy-buddy. If it weren't for the work thing, we'd be good friends. I might wave at our third neighbor, but we've never spoken. The fourth house is a crack house. I know them, but we're not on good terms, although we're polite to each other except when something bad is happening. Then we're still polite, but they're scared of me. The occupant of the fifth house I've never spoken to, never will speak to, and if the resident comes on my property he'd better have a goddamned good reason to be there or he's going to get a rifle muzzle in his face. This might seem a little extreme, but he's a repeat sex offender, which justifies it in my mind.

Many of them I grew up with that bought their parents or other neighbors houses. I bought my mother's house.

22. neighbors
We are good friends with the neighborhood couple whose house is closest to ours. We two women love to decorate and are always showing each other our finds, whether it be a new paint color or gold leafing or a garden design. My neighbor has wonderful taste and executes her projects flawlessly and I really enjoy the interaction.

As far as the men go, our neighbor is a former Manhattanite who prefers to act in plays in his spare time. This unfortunately does not leave him any time to do much around the house so sometimes he gets in over his head with around-the-house projects and my husband helps bail him out. It's really kind of funny because he is clueless about house things. One time his wife told him to take a class at Home Depot and he looked at us, puzzled, and said, "Jewish men don't do that."

The neighbors down the mountain are older and very reclusive. Never see them but once in awhile and they are very nice, if a tad nosy.

Then there are the two new neighbors, each with Hummers. Don't want to know them. Thankfully, they are not "immediate" neighbors.

Cher

p.s. I enjoyed reading all these posts. Rowdyboy, yours sounds like a nice situation.

I can hear her coming and going (we're apartment dwellers). The people who lived there before were horribly noisy and annoying. They would leave bags of fish scales and bones outside in the hallway. They would also leave their door open while cooking. I am so glad they are gone. This new lady is a welcome change. On edit: My neighbor across the hallway is my best friend from high school. I see her all the time.

25. We live on a cul-de-sac
We're in our thirties, and everyone else on our street is retired and 50+. Fairly well-to-do, and somewhat conservative.

But our immediate neighbours turned out to be full-blown leftists. Card-carrying members of the NDP and SI! Not only that, but they subscribe to the Guardian Weekly, and pass their read copies on to us. The Mr. was elected to a municipal post a few years ago on an extreme environmental/wealth sharing ticket, and he's a personal friend of several important Canadian progressives.

We loooove our leftie neighbours.
