How Can I Get A Charity To Stop Calling Asking For Money? |
|
My girlfriend has a problem.
A couple of charities keep calling her house and try to get her mother to donate.
Her mother does, which, in itself isn't the problem. The problem is she does it EVERY TIME they call.
Here's the deal. Her mother had brain cancer and had surgery a few years ago and since the surgery, she hasn't really been the same. She's not all 'together' especially when dealing with money.
So when a solicitor calls on the phone, even a charity, she'll pony up money no questions asked.
For instance, she just bought $137 worth of air fresheners from this charity that repeatedly calls her.
Her husband is upset as all hell, and keeps telling her not to donate like this, but since the surgery her memory is shot.
We're not blaming her mother, since, obviously, she's not in total control over what she does at all times.
But how can we get the charities to stop calling her? Her husband works 15 hours a day driving a truck and is often not home when they call. My girlfriend is either at school or work during these hours as well.
Asking her mother to stop donating is useless.
So what should my girlfriend do? Write a letter, try calling them? The do-not-call list doesn't apply to charities, I believe.
This is a really bad situation and her father is at the end of his rope. He's a really great guy and has been through so much with his wife's surgery and has been very patient with her since then, but throwing away his money is making him lose it.
Advice, PLEASE!!

1. Your girlfriend needs to see a lawyer, and have her declared incompetent |

Then she should become the conservator for her mother's financial affairs. the doctor might help her. It will come in handy when her mother passes away too, because the paperwork will have been done in advance.. Anyone with a life-threatening illness should do this..

2. Write a letter from the dad's point of view threatening legal action |
|
and have him sign it.
If they continue - get legal help.
those people are horrible....

3. If they are using the same numbers to call, |
|
get the phone company to block them. If both names are on the acount that is being used to make the donations, the husband might be able to contact the bank/credit company and put a block on payments to the charities.

Most charities just send a donation envelope. Prepare a form letter and send it back to the charity with the return envelope. If the woman is using a credit card, her illnes has progressed to the point where this is no longer a good idea and they should be removed. God-damn cancer!
