When they do the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars this year, |
|
which one is most likely to make you tear up?
For me, no contest. Gregory Peck.
"Stand up, Scout; your father's passing."
There's been some In Memoriam segments that really hurt. Jack Lemmon got me last year. The year before, it was Madeline Kahn. But Gregory Peck and Katharine Hepburn this year...it's gonna be a three-hanky occasion. :-(

Gregory Peck was always a hero to me, both as an actor and a man. When my father took off in 1962, Gregory Peck's movies taught me a lot about how to be a man.
By the way, wasn't he a Democrat, too?

(and my father took off in 1960, so we have that in common)
:hi: Haven't seen your name before - Welcome to DU!
(and thanks for responding - I was just about to start discreetly sniffing my armpits to see if I smell funny or something)

I've been around for awhile, but as you can see, I'm only an occasional poster.
Getting back to Gregory Peck, I put "Twelve O'Clock High" & "Keys to the Kingdom" right up there with "To Kill a Mockingbird". He never made a movie I didn't like nd he made many so-so movies good movies by his presence.

5. Went to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in LA about a month ago... |
|
because I love architecture and sacred spaces (but I digress...). While downstairs checking out a chapel, I stumbled upon the crypt of Gregory Peck! I didn't know he had died. (I guess you had to be there, it was an odd experience).
BTW, the new Disney Concert Hall by Frank Gehry is also an amazing architectural achievement. Beautiful and Amazing!

He was definitely a "Hollywood liberal." As I recall it, he was the major funding source behind the film version of The Trial of the Catonsville Nine (about the Berrigans and their campaign of anti-Vietnam civil disobedience). His son was a Democratic politician in the L.A. area in the 70s and 80s.

6. They need to do a separate In Memoriam for Kate--not only was she the |
|
greatest actress of her generation, but her passing marked the end of an era. She really was from a different time than Gregory--about 15 years earlier, and she's the last from the great 30's era.
