Brothers killed in separate car accidents minutes apart
 I can't even begin to imagine what these parents are going through

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/12/08/brothers.killed.ap/index.html

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (AP) -- Sheriff's deputy Andy McDowell was forced to live a parent's worst nightmare twice in a matter of minutes.

After he was taken to the site where one of his two sons was killed in a car crash early Wednesday, McDowell was driven past another fatal accident. Only later did he learn that the fiery wreck took the life of his only other child.

"You take the most unimaginable hell that a parent could be told and double that," Warren County Deputy Coroner Dwayne Lawrence said.

Rory McDowell, 23, and Cory McDowell, 21, both died within a couple of miles from the home they shared with their father in southern Kentucky's rural Warren County.

Awful ones. I can't imagine losing ONE child - losing both? In separate accidents? It would be bad enough to lose them in one accident but what are the odds?

I can't even bear to think about this...

11. Easily preventable deaths, I'm sorry to say
The lack of proper - and mandatory - driver's ed in this country is a goddamned shame. Our government doesn't consider our kids - or us - worth it. My heart goes out to their family and friends, but our government could have done so much more for them than my best wishes can do now. Peace.

It is very sad, and to know that the father may feel gulit for talking on the phone with him at the time can only add to the pain.

28. How do you know proper driver's ed
would've saved them?

How do you know the brothers didn't take an adequate driver's ed class at their high school (Warren East)?

How do you know their father, a deputy who has some experience dealing with auto crashes, didn't personally school his sons on good driving?

How do you think government is going to quell the male teenage urge to drive fast & wild? Should they hire little old ladies to chauffer teenagers??

32. I'm in my thirties now, but
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 10:26 PM by Jamastiene
my aunt has been a real deterrant to speeding for me. She is a passenger seat driver from the word go. Every time I take her to the VA hospital she watches every move I make. If the speed limit is 45 and I go 46, she says to slow down even if I am going down a hill. It's nerve racking, but I sure don't speed.

30. Oh, I don't know
we have driver's ed here and our kids die on these huge trees in droves. They don't wear seatbelts, they drink, they drive too fast. They think they will live forever.

These two accidents... how unbelieveable.

14. Heard that on the radio today. My first thought: A pact?
Only the two brothers were killed--each by hitting a tree, at virtually the same time--and no reported injuries.

Regardless, very sad.

33. Probably not a suicide pact.
The brother involved in the first crash was wearing his seat belt which is probably indicative of it not being a suicide.

It's not yet known whether the second brother was wearing his belt because the car was burned pretty badly.

I still haven't been able to determine whether the second brother knew about the first crash and if he did whether he knew his brother was dead.

If he did know that certainly could've been a factor - either extremely distracted driving or maybe a spur-of-the-moment suicide.

The latter seems unlikely since the word is the second brother's crash probably would not have been fatal had it not been for the fire.

The way things are in Bowling Green, considering this involves a law enforcement family, if there is any controversial evidence it will be quickly covered-up and never make the news.

But I can honestly say that I have heard no rumors which are at odds with the official version.

20. When I lived in Phoenix and worked for the newspaper
I wrote a story about two brothers who died after they ran into each other at an intersection. They had been through their daily routines when they just happened to be at the same place at the same time. When I read that story on CNN, I immediately thought of the story I wrote.

a kid was drag racing and hit a car and killed the driver. It ended up being his mom! How terribly sad.

26. The weather wasn't a contributing factor.
It was a bit cold (low 20's) but clear and dry.

29. I found that out this morning, when I spoke with my sister.
I had seen the front moving up from Ala/Miss that day and it looked like it passed through there but must have pulled east.

My sister told me one of the cars was a Porsche.

Regardless of other factors it is a profound tragedy.

31. That's so bad I think I'd lose my faith over it.
Seriously, I don't think I'd want any more "conversations" with God after something like that if I believed God is supposed to be omnipotent.
