I'm thinking of selling all my vinyl and my record player... |
|
Keep in mind I'm not an avid collector. But I have about 75 full length records and about 100 7" singles. All are of the punk, hardcore, and indie rock variety and none unto themselves would fetch a lot of money. But I'm thinking of selling them as one large lot.
My only ambivalence is the possible regret. Not from a musical standpoint since I have all of them on CD now and can still hear the music. More from a nostalgia perspective.
I've thought about keeping them around for my daughter some day to appreciate but then I realize this. In 15 years when she is a teenager, what are the chances that: A)She will like punk/hardcore/indie rock that is 20-30 years old B)She will even care about vinyl or the concept of vinyl
The fact is that kids now are even discarding the concept of CDs and listening to music exclusively in MP3 format. So by the time she is a teenager, vinyl will be 3-4 formats removed from the way she listens to music.
Thoughts?

1. and I'll buy your collection off you... |
|
seriously...if you want to sell it let me know, I'd love to buy it. Contact me with a fair price and we'll talk.
I can understand your reasons for doing this but I would be lost without my music collection. Even the obscure stuff that only gets a listen once every ten years or so.

3. If I decide to sell I'll keep you in mind... |

Like I said, nothing I have is particularly rare. But as a collection might mean something to someone.
Of course I know I'm going to go through each one and find some reason to keep each thing.

many years ago and I regret it today because a few were rare. I wish I had recorded them onto CD (but it was before I had a CD burner), but I didn't think I'd ever want to hear them again.

I recently moved from a house that I'd lived in for thirty plus years...had a vinyl collection of about 1000 records (going back to the 50's) that nobody was interested in buying. Finally filled up my trunk and tossed them all in a dumpster.
Some regrets...wish that I had saved some of the album covers to use as wall hangings.

5. I would never throw them away... |

If they sell....great. If not, then I will keep them.
And I am going to hold on to some of them for wall hangings as you mentioned.

6. I've been thinking about doing the same thing |
|
I have about 1500 albums and probably 200 45's. It's a pretty eclectic collection with everything from Big Band to hard core punk and even some sound FX albums. Some “rare” stuff, I guess, ex: I have a New York Dolls bootleg signed by the whole band.

7. Never get rid of vinyl |
|
It's like getting rid of a lung!
And of course, I'll buy some of what you got if you sell. Perhaps I'll even work out some kind of trade deal.

Trust me, your daughter will thank you. Kids will always dig vinyl and record players. Just check out the business at record shops in college towns, and the market for phonographs on eBay. Plus who knows, your collection could get her into collecting vinyl, a hobby that a LOT of people are into.

9. Collectively You Won't Get Much, Either |
|
I had well over 2k albums when I sold all but about 150. Made about $50 for each box of 100 and that was including rarities - back in 1993 or so when there lots of people buying used vinyl.
You might do better to sell the more rare pieces, or those who have diehard followings, on eBay first then get whatever you can, collectively, afterwards.
