Who is/was your BEST fur-friend?
Mine is Misty. She followed me home from the bus stop one day. I took one look in those big brown eyes and I'm lost in them to this day.

Strange thing is that she is so well trained I can't believe no one came looking for her. She was in the Humane Society for a week (standard practice) and no one came for her. The guy who came and got her from us was disappointed that we took her because he wanted her for himself. He said he's never worked with a dog like her before.

5. My best friend was Joker...
a black cat who saved my life. He was a good hearted, mild mannered fellow who loved to sleep with me and just liked being noticed.

His purr was like a lawnmower--very loud. He and I used to walk to McDonalds in the morning for a bit of breakfast and he'd just sit calmly outside the door until I came and fed him. After a while, other "regular" customers noticed him and tossed him bits and pieces of what they couldn't eat. He gobbled them all up.

One day, I came home from work and the maid in the hotel I was living at had let him run out. She opened the hall door, and his curiousity took the best of him. I never saw him again, although I looked for days...I still miss him, even if has been 27 years.

*sigh*

12. Oh I am so sorry!
I've never lost a pet like that but I can imagine how you must have felt.

But, may I ask how the cat saved your life?

23. It was strange...
When we were transferred from NAS Millington to NAS Oceana, we took our mobile home with us. In Millington, our furnace and stove was set up for natural gas--in Oceana, it had to be converted to Propane. There was a kit included for just that, and I installed it--according to directions I thought.

Well, one very cold night, I turned on the furnace and went to bed. About 3 am, Joker jumped on my chest, howling like a banshee. I was very groggy...didn't understand what he was doing and shoved him off. He jumped back up and howled again. I felt so woozy...and smelled something. I wasn't sure what it was, so I got up. As soon as I did, he ran out the cat door into the night.

I realized that there was gas leaking into our mobile home. I apparently did not install the conversion kit properly into the furnace and it was pouring raw propane. I ran outside, shut off the main valve, and opened all the doors and windows. I grabbed a comforter and sat out on the steps until the sun came up. Joke joined me a few minutes after I sat down and cuddled under the comforter, purring like...he always did. I just hugged him until I dozed off. Called a repairman when I could, he came and fixed the problem.

You can't beat loyalty like that.

6. Harry Truman
Harry's a nine-year-old gray tabby. He has big gold eyes - "big-eyed kitty," we call him. He's warm and friendly. Loves to crawl up into Kathy's lap when she's reading the paper. She can never seem to tell him to get down. She tries, but usually gives in, saying "I can read my paper any time." He has huge paws, and makes wonderful biscuits. He's the sweetest boy on the planet.

9. My best friend was Bear, Bear
She was a Rottweiler. She died in 1999 at the age of 12. But I now have another best friend. Legend, my Rottie. I adopted her a month after Bear, Bear died. She is my fur child and a real spoiled rotten Rottie. She is a real sweetheart, just as Bear, Bear was. Rottweilers have a bad rap from the media. Anytime one of these dogs bites someone, it's splashed all over the newspapers and TV. But I don't see any publicity when a cocker spaniel, poodle, Lab or any other breed (except a Pit Bull terrier, which I have also owned) bites someone. A Rottweiler requires a firm hand and a responsible owner.

10. Hard to pick just one....
DC has been with me for 6 years, but is the old man of the bunch. I got him purely by chance, after his previous owner slammed him into a fence for some undefined transgression. He chose me. When I was working on my Masters thesis and getting really stressed out, he would sit in front of me and give me that slow kitty blink that says, I love you, and all will be OK. Then, I'd have a good cry and he'd jump in my lap to comfort me. We've come a long way together. Tootise was another abandoned kitty who my wife found by our mailbox. She is my burrower and more often than not, curls up under the covers with me when I take an afternoon nap-purrs like a motorboat al lthe while, and at night, sleeps on my pillow. Pooky is the newest of the three, one more abandoned little cat. Looked like the gray cat from Pet Semetary (SP.?) when we took him in. Now, he always curls up in my lap when I'm working and makes every effort to keep me from leaving in the morning. He is OK until I get out of the shower, at which point he starts meowing in the most pitiful way imaginable. He bats my legs as I walk around getting dressed, and attacks my shoes, (as if they are attacking me and making me leave), trying to prevent my putting them on. They all make me feel loved, and I love them all uniquely in turn.

15. What a beautiful dog! Misty
We have had many best friends over the years. We are being loved by Kenai and Koda at the present time. Koda was rescued from Paws and is proving to be an excellent companion. She was found as a stay, not yet a year old. So smart so sweet.

17. This one
She was actually my mom's cat, and my sister's before that. Her name was Myshra (mee-shra) and she was the sewwtest, suckiest kitty I've ever known, by far. She's been gone over ten years now, and I still miss her terribly. <snif>

22. My cat, 'Mouse'.
He's been gone since 1998 (an aortic aneurysm), but he was a 'walk-on' who showed up at my brother's house Friday after Thanksgiving 1995. He was this tiny little kitten with these ENORMOUS ears (like Mickey Mouse ears, hence his name), and he slept the 1st night in my bed, and every night he lived thereafter. He was almost dog-like in some of his actions: he'd wait by the front door for me to come home from school, he gave MANY kitty kisses, he was a cuddler and wherever I was, that's where he wanted to be, too.

He was my mate, my pal and my friend, and I miss him to this day.

R.I.P, Mouse.

25. My Poodle "Rabbi Straussman" Frosty
Don't get down my back for calling him that. The Rabbi use to come in to the Doctors office that I worked at while I was in High School and he saw the picture of my Poodle on my desk and said it looked like him and it did. They both had jet black hair with a white beard.

I loved that Dog and he would go everywhere with me. He would hang on my coat with his teeth until I took him car riding. He had his own chair at the dinner table and he slept on my back every night, well half way on my back.

He died 11 years ago and I still miss him. I would dress him up for all of the holidays and he unwrapped his Christmas Presents on his own.

We lived two doors down from a church and they would leave their doors open during service. My two poodles were out on our balcony one day and the parishioners were singing real loud so the poodles started singing and they were very loud they were so loud that they minister came out to see what was going on and then the parishioners came out for a look and they slammed the door on the dogs howling.
