|
Alytron says: hahaha I'm totally unreasonably angry at the dictionary
Iconoclast says: haha, why's that?
Alytron says: Because it claims that PYJAMAS is a british variant of PAJAMAS
Alytron says: helllooooo they INVENTED THE LANGUAGE motherfuckers, PAJAMAS is an AMERICAN variant of the proper PYJAMAS
Iconoclast says: hahaha
Alytron says: Well I mean, come on now, you know what I'm sayin'
Iconoclast says: haha, i agree
Alytron says: haha stupid American arrogance
Iconoclast says: haha
Alytron says: IT SAYS THAT ABOUT COLOUR TOO
Alytron says: fuck you Merriam-Webster, I'm not using you anymore
Iconoclast says: hahaha
Alytron says: boycott the evil imperialist american dictionary!
Alytron says: See, dictionary.com has it right: \Py*ja"mas\, or, chiefly U. S., Pajamas \Pa*ja"mas\,
Iconoclast says: hasta la english language siempre! and so forth
Alytron says: but they still fucked up colour
Iconoclast says: haha
Alytron says: and honour
Iconoclast says: you should start your own dictionary
Alytron says: I don't think they understand what 'variant of' means
Iconoclast says: or maybe use oxford? haha
Alytron says: variant: Deviating from a standard, usually by only a slight difference
Alytron says: The STANDARD is the english used the WORLD OVER, the ORIGINAL english
Iconoclast says: haha
Alytron says: 1 new country that likes to make shit up does not a standard make
Alytron says: See I told you I was unreasonably angry
Iconoclast says: hahaha, it's amusing though

2. I can forgive that if it's an American dictionary. |
|
Obviously, an American dictionary would give preference to the American spellings and pronunciations. One would expect a proper British English dictionary to give preference to the Queen's English.

even if it's an American dictionary, there is NO EXCUSE for a DICTIONARY, of all things, to misuse words ;)

4. But in the American vernacular, it's not a misuse. |
|
In American, pajamas is the preferred. In proper English, it's the variant. It's okay for an American dictionary to use its own language, even if the rest of the English speaking world wonders why it was altered in the first place.
(You know I'm just having fun with you, right?)

It's not preferred. It's standard. "substantially uniform and well established by usage in the speech and writing of the educated and widely recognized as acceptable"
ONE country does not a standard make.
You're just an evil imperialist pigdog. STOP IMPINGING ON MY RIGHTS AS A PROPER ENGLISH SPEAKER
(I think I know ;) )

20. one country makes a standard |
|
if that one country is America. Why should Britain make the standard just because they imperialistically exported their variants all over the world? They are just one country that created an empire. If it was not for America jumping in to protect them so we could maintain our arms exports, the British would be speaking original Prussian. :P

It rots people's minds. I've always used British spellings (honour, colour, etc.) because that's how I learned to spell and it's correct. But I had a professor once call me pretentious because of it and he handed me an American dictionary. Pretentious, my arse!
Only dictionary worth a damn is the OED.

Complete unabridged? Expensive and takes up a lot of space, but I'm green with envy.
It really is fascinating to read.... almost addictive.

16. Yes, it is the unabridged one...MANY volumes..... |
|
But we have the built-in space for it, so it wasn't really a problem...
It is almost too detailed to read, if you know what I mean......
Almost TMI......
Please don't be jealous my dear.....I didn't mean to hurt you that way, or any way, for that matter.....

Americans need to learn to use metric, as well. Especially for temperatures. °C > °F
