OK. Mom's lost her hearing aids - AGAIN.
"Mom, where are your hearing aids?"
"They're not in my ears? No wonder I couldn't hear."
"Where did you have them last?"
"I have no idea... they'll turn up."

I turn to my dad and tell him her hearing aids are missing.
"yeah, that happens."
"You don't seem worried."
"It happens all the time"

** sigh ** what can I do?

1. Sounds like my grandmother.
Except that she's just too vain to admit she needs hearing aids, so she just doesn't put them in on purpose. :)

Or use a chalk board or pen and paper to communicate?

:hide: Though you are not a catholic, I can share with you the prayer we have always used when we lose something "Tony, Tony look around, somethings lost and can't be found." (To St. Anthony, the Patron Saint of lost things)

Good luck your Cheesiness  :loveya:

10. As long as he helps in finding the hearing aids, what's the big deal?

 Aren't we supposed to accept all help as offered, if it is comes from the heart and for good cause (and legal)?

:freak:

Although I am under orders to not look until tomorrow. I think there's a pride issue involved. ;)

I think Dad will get a kick out of the prayer.

They've both gone to bed. Now I have the computer, and the Packers on in the next room. Maybe I'll go look for some wine while I'm at it.

15. Nope, not here.
I once tried to download Spybot on her computer, and I think I messed up whatever crap was on here. So, for now, I no longer download anything else. It's a slow, small computer - but she does have cable access.

PM's still work, though - don't they?

14. As someone who wears hearing aids
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 10:44 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Sometimes it "feels" better to have the world on mute. Sometimes its not about vanity...it's more about the world you've known for a long time before you finally got the hearing aids.

I can totally understand the frustration of having to repeat things to someone who's hearing impaired. But, am hoping that those who have their hearing will be a bit kinder to those who have a disability you can't see.

If I had to wear leg braces all the time, there would be times I would want them off for a while. If you saw me, would you be frustrated or kind?

It's difficult having a disability that people sneer at (not that anyone here is doing that, but have had it happen to me more than a few times) ...it seems being deaf, hard of hearing is sometimes looked down upon as that person being inferior in some way. Honest, we're not inferior. We're just disabled in a way you can't physically see.

Although I'm not very old, I had to get hearing aids due to hereditary hearing loss in the voice range. Sometimes, it really feels great to not have something stuck in your ears that continually forces you to mentally sort out all the noises, all the sounds, all the voices. As with many who have difficulty hearing, I also have trouble with directional hearing. So, sometimes it's pleasant to be in my own home and not have to have my mind so on the go. It's also feels good to not have something in my ear for a while.

One thing my audiologist pointed out is that because I started with my hearing aids at a relatively young age, I can have increases in neural connections and improve my hearing ability..et VOILA! It HAS happened! Am still partially deaf, but hear better than I used to. She also pointed out that when older people finally get aids due to age-related hearing loss, they tend to not cope as well as someone younger.

Patience, Rev. :) Your mom sounds sweet :hi:

17. Oh, I'm not angry or anything...
More frustrated and a little bit sad, I think. She's on some new pain meds that are making her more scatter-brained than usual. And my poor dad takes it all in stride.

It's just hard to watch them get older, and not be able to do a damned thing to make it better for them. I am cherishing what precious little time we have left together... and trying very hard not to cry.

22. THANK YOU, SAINT TONY!!!
I told them about the Tony prayer.
5 minutes later, as mom is sitting at the breakfast table, I look at her and ask "do you have pockets in that robe?"

You should have seen the look on her face. Priceless. O8)

25. You know.
I have heard they sometimes do that on purpose. They don't want to bother listening. They can totally tell you the truth (that they didn't hear you) if they have conveniently "lost" their hearing aid.
