Did you notice how good this year's movie blockbusters were? |
|
True, we still had to contend with the usual garbage from Michael Bay (please stop buying those tickets, you're only encouraging him), but I can't recall a better crop of big-budget fantasies hitting the multiplexes.
"King Kong" "Revenge of the Sith" "Batman Begins" "The Chronicles of Narnia" "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" "War of the Worlds"
All in all, this was a good year to be a genre fan.

1. To compliment the blockbusters, Walk The Line & Jarhead were both |
|
kickass films too. And Brokeback Mountain is supposed to be a winner. A good year for film.

2. Oh, I wasn't surprised that those films were artistic triumphs |
|
But let's face it: most blockbusters are shite. This year, however, the large-scale productions actually told HUMAN stories (even Lucas plumbed some intriguing depths with his Faustian space opera).
As for the smaller scale films, I confess to being blown away by "The Constant Gardener," "Crash" and "Good Night and Good Luck."

3. I was reading an article somewhere |
|
a while ago that talked about how Indie talent is being recruited by the big studios to lend a creative hand. That is apparently a huge reason why these movies have more depth than before. It's a wonderful thing for independent talent to finally be recognized(and the movies we see improve as a result..a bonus)

7. I was... regarding Walk the Line.. I mean there was not one cliche in that |
|
pic. And it never got sappy. Those performances were 100% honest. And thanks for reminding me of Constant Gardner. Feinnes best work in a long time.
No one asked but....
My fave scenes in jarhead: The guys singing along to Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P." and when they come across that spooked horse dripping with oil with the skies all black from the burning wells.
In Walk the Line, I liked it when June's parents told her to go help Johnny (holiday dinner) and then when they both busted out those shotguns to run that sleazy dude off the property.

such an incredible film with an outstanding performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Also "Mean Creek". So yeah, good year for film although Hollywood is continuing to eat itself.

4. Not a one of them original. And the rest of the year there was crap. |
|
It kind of irks me how the studios bring up their "good" movies either in the summer, or just before/in December for the Oscar buzz.
This wasn't a good year for movies, this was a good two or three months of movies, LOL. They were as usual outweighed by the stinkers.
And not one of the films you named are original, stand alone pieces unless you count Sith (which I don't).
It's actually pathetic. But, those movies you named are indeed better than....say...Hulk. :scared:

9. Well, a good number of films are adaptations |
|
"Gone With the Wind," "The Wizard of Oz," and "The Maltese Falcon" were three such success stories. I don't care if they're original, I just want to see well-crafted interpretations.

8. "Who is Michael Bay?" Prepare thyself. |
|
"Armageddon." "Pearl Harbor." "The Rock." "The Island."
Bay is the anti-christ of cinema.

Although I'll confess that I wasn't too impressed by War of the Worlds (I usually love Spielberg's work).
