68. I do indeed feel confident and prepared...
Oddly enough, recent discussion on DU (death penalty stuff) has helped me prepare for my anthropology final, which is on Thursday night. And my other two are two different political science courses, so DU kinda helps there sometimes as well.

Okay, here's the story . . .
I used to be managing editor at a daily business journal, and I had an absolutely wonderful staff of young, smartass reporters. :eyes:

One afternoon, just before deadline, I was editing wire copy, and up popped a story about an accordianist, but the spelling of "accordianist" looked "odd" to me. So I yell across the newsroom to the only reporter in close proximity, "Hey, Alexi, how do you spell "accordianist?"

Without missing a beat, Alexi, spells out, "L-O-O-Z-A-H."

 :spray:

58. Oh, that's classic!
One thing I love about newsrooms: lotta quick minds in 'em.

But I'm dismayed that you'd think a wire service could ever make a mistake.

67. There's a repeating thread at Testy Copy Editors
"Hundreds of papers use AP unedited," followed by a goof or just something stupid or poorly written in a story that made it to print... or to a web site, actually.

But considering how many words they move, it's a wonder they don't make a lot more errors than they do.

Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 01:38 AM by jobycom
She's throwing up less, though she's had a bad day. Right now she is at my feet, purring loudly, debating whether to jump into my lap. She still lacks the strength, which is bad, but she now has the inclination, which is an improvement. I think she'll make it, at least as much as you'd expect a 10 year old cat to make it. Fewer bad days, and more signs of improvement, overall. Still not gaining weight, though.

She put a wicked bite on me yesterday, as she tried to force the syringe out of her mouth. She bit my shoulder, and left a horrendous bruise. The neighbors probably heard my howl.

63. I'm
a rare person in many ways... Some of them good, even. :-)

Besides, I was the stay-at-home parent for the first few years of the older one, and I'm still the one who picks them up from school and spends the afternoons with them, so I think I'm a pretty good parent, irregardless of gender-based titles. Not good enough, mind you. But good.

65. One of my best friends
is a stay-at-home parent to a six-year-old daughter. He's made a lot of career sacrifices because of that commitment, but his daughter is kind, fun and bright, and speaks four languages fluently, in large part (I believe) due to her father's influence in her life.

Does any really good parent ever think he/she is "good enough"?

74. My oldest daughter
almost speaks English semi-fluently. Her grades show this. :( On the other hand, she is also kind, LIBERAL, and one of the most perceptive humans I've ever met when it comes to understanding the intentions of others. I've given her warnings about friends of hers only to have her tell me she already understands that. Her teachers were always impressed by that. She literally had her first through fourth grade teachers give her awards at the end of each year, and before the whole school claim she was the sweetest child they had ever taught. Four times.

She can't pass math to save her life, though. Well, she could. She won't try.

The other kid is not so kind, but shows brilliance beyond her age.

Alright, enough bragging. They are probably so wonderful in spite of me, rather than because of me. :-) And if you ever want me to shut up, don't get me talking about my kids!

80. At the risk of sounding like a math idiot
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 02:23 AM by Heidi
(which I once was), I have to ask, how do you know your daughter isn't trying? My dad, who taught advanced math when I was in school, thought I wasn't trying, too. But the truth was, I just didn't "get it," and no amount of tutoring helped me. When I was in my late 20s, a light went on in my head and suddenly I was able to think in those abstract ways so essential to success in higher math.

I truly believe that if math is taught in the right way, kids can get it.

I'll never ask you to shut up about your kids or anything else. :pals:

122. Well,
She's also failing Language Arts (used to be called English), science, and world geography, but I didn't want to get into specifics. She's passing choir and PE and study skills. So she can pass a course on how to study, but she can't study to pass other courses!

On math, I've worked with her. I've watched her take forty minutes on one problem. Once, we were trying to go somewhere she wanted, and she stalled around forever on the work. Finally, with about ten minutes to go, I told her we weren't going if she didn't finish her homework in time. She flew through a whole page of problems, getting every one of them right in ten minutes. The few times I can force her to work on them, she gets it. Same in every course.

Cats often are loyal to their chosen humans; and though I have only anecdotal evidence of this, I believe they can be loyal to one another, despite their lack of "pack" mentality. I very much love the independent spirit of cats.

95. Heidi, you remember the fun you had with your phone company?
I think my garage is making a bid for the most useless customer service trophy. I brought my car in with a problem four weeks ago yesterday, they diagnosed it and booked it in to be fixed two weeks later. Quite a long wait, but I guess they were busy maybe. Anyway, when the date came they called up to say they had to postpone; one of the engineers was away so they were backed up. Fair enough, these things happen, so they rearranged for it to be done last friday. When last thursday came around they called to say they needed to postpone again, because they hadn't got the necessary part. Now I am waiting for them to call back to tell me when I can bring it in, and I am still driving a broken car more than four weeks since I originally brought it in.

Do they get the award?

110. I looked at that
Skoda garages are quite few and far between. There is one in Milton Keynes, which is just about an acceptable distance to go, so I rang them up. They were prepared to do the work, but they were going to charge me 15 pounds a day for the loan car. I told them no thanks.

Hmm, loan car? That sounds like a hire car to me!

I managed to beat my local garage down to the 28th December. :)
