Ever heard of Brian Eno
I just read an article he'd written in Time magazine from January which basically said his advice to America is to reconnect with the world: sound familiar? 10 points and the best Brian Eno song to who gets it right (via, I don't know, somehow I'll get that song to you), 20 points if you guess the song.

You lose if you've never heard of Brian Eno but have heard of U2, David Bowie, or the Talking Heads, because he is greatly responsible for their careers not counting Bowie.

Here's the story:

http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/2003/0120/cover/view_eno.html

Don't forget the 'l'.

1. Baby's On Fire
Started with Roxy Music, moved on to ambient, helped support early New Wave.

Also a notorious "traitor"

3. Traitor?
I've never heard that...why?

Not "Baby's On Fire" though it's a great song..."better throw her in the water." I'm impressed, not enough people acknowledge that he even existed. I'll announce the best shortly (in my opinion of course).

6. I think that site is satire
Justs lists everyone who opposed the Iraq War as a traitor.

Mr. Eno apparently thought it was not a good idea, hence "traitor"

They give you the names of the good people that are on our side... and also some good entertainment explaining to you what witty thing they said in the first place. If you ignore the commentary with all of its unsuccesful wit, it can be a good time.

17. I actually enjoyed his anti-war song.
Little acoustic diddy... forget the name, the chorus is "from florida...to washington". And just to put it in perspective (my use of the word actually) my tastes usually fall along the lines of the Dead Kennedys and other punk rock bands, as well :)

20. That site is
the funniest/saddest/scariest thing I may have ever seen. Even if it IS satire, the fact that there's so many people who have sent in their names as "patriots"....yikes! :scared:

Among the many great works of Mr. Eno, I think "An Ending (Ascent)" is one of the most chillingly gorgeous pieces of music ever. :)

(And after mentioning that, I now have Aphex Twin "Girl Boy Song" in my head. Go figure.)

5. Eno IS Tops
I saw Eno over the web on Channel 4(British TV) the same day that my Dad died AND I shut my thumb in a car door (terrible day). I'll never forget it, he said we were clearly imperialists right in front of a laughing American ambassador and some English general who agreed. It was a great terrible day, because I had to find out why he had said such a thing. No guess on the best Eno song?

4. Have YOU ever heard of Oblique Strategies?
Edited on Sat Nov-22-03 11:10 PM by tjdee
Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt came up with these cards--they're to be used as a set of guiding principles, or if you get stuck on a problem. Very cool.
http://www.rtqe.net/ObliqueStrategies/

A flash version where you can click a 'card':
http://www.dimensional.com/~jthomas/oblique/

They're great for writers...HEY, LOL, I don't know about being responsible for U2's career, LOL! He didn't hook up with them until The Unforgettable Fire (yeah yeah yeah, they weren't major stars until they hooked up with him, but it *is* their music and their lyrics, they've got the raw materials)--also, I'd add Daniel Lanois to that (he co-produced a lot of their stuff with Eno). I do bow to Eno's greatness, he is very good at keeping them under control in terms of different things...

He's also a competent musician in his own right...I believe he's Roxy Music?

8. Roxy Music...
I'd heard he was in Roxy Music before Brian Ferry, left about 1973 to start a solo career.

I definitely think he is one of the most innovative popular musicians of the 20th (and maybe 21st) century.

11. He was Roxy
but he went on to much better things. Also add Devo to that list . About U2, what about their certainly best album "The Joshua Tree", that album practically is "Another Green World" packaged for American audiences.

Anyway, I've gotten a much better response than was expected, so here is the best Eno song...

12. I wouldn't go that far
Eno contributed little vcs-3 "treatments" and noises, and lots of feathers and lipstick.

14. Listen to...
"The Big Ship" on "Another Green World" (not to mention the rest of the album) and just dare tell me that the first song on "The Joshua Tree" (you know, the ambience that makes people actually think the album is great) isn't Brian Eno inspired.

Eno accepted a lot of money for repackaging his work here...but can you blame him, he's bald! Nobody would've accepted a bald guy in the US music market: too bad, coulda had some thought to it.

Just remember "The Big Ship", this song might as well have been sampled for "The Joshua Tree."

15. I've not heard Another Green World, I'll give it a listen.
I always wanted to listen to Eno's other endeavors, to see if I could hear the influence...didn't know where to start (LOL, I have that problem a lot with new groups/people).

buy "Another Green World," you won't be disappointed. Then you'll be confident enough to buy more Brian Eno albums (never been disappointed).

13. The Best Brian Eno Song of All Time
"Kings Lead Hat" (1975) about the almighty penis is his best song in my opinion, that was on the album "Before and After Science," an album you must own.

Number two overall was "Lizard Point" from the album "On Land", a song sampled from the jungle, completely ambient, incredible, put your headphones on and crank them to max, this song speaks to the spirit.

If the best song choice was restricted to being related to America, than it's "Dead Finks Don't Talk", on "Here Come the Warm Jets" (of Urine). I love Eno. Thanks for replying.

24. "The Fat Lady of Limbourg" or "By this River" would be mine
I don't know if he does his ambient music/video installations anymore, but the ones I saw in the early eighties were great.

Fabulous article, too. Thanks for the link.

From the wording of your post, I don't quite get what you're after (although I assume it's a question about which song of his has this theme) so I'm just layin' my favorite songs on ya.

By a stretch, "By this River" is certainly about musing over how things went awry...

He's a treasure; there's no other way to put it.
