What kind of gift would you get for a brand new US citizen? |
|
I have a friend who's taking the pledge today and I'm scrambling to get her something that says "Welcome--now you're just one of us slobs". I can't mail order anything, because I need if for tonight. I was thinking of a book; something like Howard Zinn's "People's History of the US", but I'd like to have some options. (She's a Liberal, by the way and hates Bush). Suggestions?

5. I would, but she isn't a smartass yet. |
|
Her sense of humor is really different from ours--I don't think she'd get it. But hey, maybe I'll buy that one for myself for Christmas!

7. Hey - this is a really good question!!! |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 10:03 AM by Patiod
Went through the same question when my friend's Romanian-born husband became an American.
The Jon Stewart book isn't appropriate, because their citizenship is too new and too dear to them to poke any fun at yet. I don't know about your friend, zanne, but mine is more-American-than-thou.
So you need something serious.
How about an American flag (available at most hardware or garden-supply stores), or something nice with a flag on it, like a mug (try a local gift shop), or a flag pin (they have them with rhinestones - try a department store jewelry counter).

9. Actually, she's kind of cynical about this administration... |
|
She's Russian, so she has a good deal of cynicism from that experience, too. She really wants to be able to vote. She says she'll register as a Democrat the first chance she gets.

10. Good! She'll balance my friend's husband, the arch-conservative |
|
He's Romanian, and thinks Bush is a God.
