Anyone listen to XM radio?
Thinking about getting it for my son for Christmas. He is visually impared and listens to local radio quite a bit.

Anyone have an opinion they want to share?

1. Just ordered it after a free (3 day) online sample!!
Loved what I heard and can't wait to get the real thing.

Go here for the free try-out: http://xmro.xmradio.com/xstream/registration/registration.jsp?userForward=default

I ordered the Delphi MyFi (portable, but also comes with kit for home and car set up). Best of luck!

2. I have SIRIUS and would not be without it (or XM)
it is well worth the money.

I happen to like SIRIUS because I am a big college football fan. Other than that, I think they are relatively close. XM is a tad bit cheaper.

Go for it!

3. I'm still agonizing
My S.O., who will be getting most of the use out of it (he drives, I commute by train) loves Howard Stern AND the Phillies, which are exclusive to Serius and XM respectively.

Tough call.

5. I Love XM
We got it 1 year ago and have loved it ever since. Can't beat the non-stop music. Plus, they have traffic and local weather.

8. I think it'd be a delightful present!
He's sure to enjoy it.

But, I'd suggest maybe a higher grade receiver than the Roady2.

They have a feature which works similar to an audio DVR.

Something not found on most regular radios.

10. Do you have a particular suggestion on the receiver?
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 01:44 PM by Dirty Hippie
Do you need a receiver or can you just stream it?

12. Any one of these...

You can find better prices at other retailers.

Once you subscribe to the service you can stream online as well.

15. If he can get everything by streaming I'll forgo the receiver
It would be harder for him to operate than his computer which he uses with the aid of a screen reader.

I've emailed XM and asked if there is any difference.

Thanks for all of the responses!

16. I bought my MyFi at ...
http://www.abesofmaine.com/viewproduct.asp?id=dlsa1011311p1&l=CNET .

Check out all of the satellite radio stuff they have:

I've been happy as can be for 4-5 months now; I used to have Sirius, but went to XM for Air America. I get Sirius music stations through DISH-TV.

9. I plan to get XM for Christmas
I might get that Sirius radio which looks damn cool but it's about $50 more. Plus, Siruis doesnt have MLB, either.

11. My big complaint about XM
I have rather specialized music interests. One of the stations that I listen to the most is Ngoma, which is the station for African rock that I like very much.

This keeps getting yanked off the airwaves in favor of other things; first, Hurricane Katrina victim relief, which was fine, but now for Nashville Christmas music! Puke! It also gets replaced by some French music station.

Other stations have been temporarily removed for Christmas music too, one being Luna, the Latin jazz station, and the World station. Can I point out that both Luna and Ngoma have been replaced by the SAME Nashville Christmas music?

There are about 20 Christmas music stations on XM now, not to mention the Christmas music on other stations.

I really don't understand how they program. This type of show-bouncing reminds me of TV more than anything else. You get to like something and it is gone.

By the way, I complained by email and got a robot response.

14. I've noticed that too...
I've written it off to growing pains. I'm glad you brought it to
their attention.

13. I've had it for about a year, like it a lot.
There's quite a bit of music variety, plus AAR, traffic and weather reports, sports, and cable TV feeds.

17. And Keith Olberman on MSNBC on XM at 8pm during the week!
I can listen to Keith even if I'm stuck at work or if I'm stuck in the car driving around.

With that and Air America Radio and the occasional flipping over to CNN during breaking news is well worth it!

18. It would probably be great for the visually impaired. I am a huge fan
of satellite radio and recommend it to everyone with deep tentacles in the music world or with a hellish commute.
