It was a long time coming, but today, 6 months after first being approached about the idea, I was formally nominated by the members of my church to be their Lay Leader.
The nomination will be formalized at our district Charge Conference 2 weeks from today, and I will likely begin my new duties as on January first. (there is some question as to whether they will begin immediately or at the first of the year)
It is exciting because I have a deep love for that church. I actually pass by 3 other United Methodist churches, and go two towns (well, one city and one town) away to attend this church. They are very special, loving, caring, compassionate people. We are a "Reconciling" congregation, which means we have made a deliberate statement to gay and lesbian Christians that they are welcome with us for who they are.
It is exciting, also, because there was a competition, (that is really a first in my 28 years of membership)and, selfishly, I very much wanted to win this office over this particular other person. I knnow that may sound "unChristian", but it is human. I have been, under another pastor, actually removed from offices twice before because this man or his wife decided they wanted the office, and that pastor allowed them to simply walk in and take what they wanted. This time it was by written vote, and I have heard, though I don't know the exact tally, that it wasn't close.
This is rambling, I know, but I am elated to have this opportunity now to give back to my church for all the compassion and love they have given to me over the years.
>>>>OOOPS..I'm so excited I can't spell!!!
