I need some good technical advice re: wireless remote internet stuff |
|
Howdee. As y'all know, I work for truthout. I'm also on the road alot, which has on occassion presented annoying conflicts with my truthout work (i.e. the hotel only has dialup, etc.). I have sold my boss on the theory that I could really use a system that allows me to remotely link to the internet from anywhere.
Has anyone here had experience with this technology? Can you recommend a system that is reliable, can handle fairly large file volume (i.e. FTPing 4 or 5 Meg files to the server), and will not necessarily break the bank? Many thanks in advance.

1. They've just upgraded the wireless standard to |

802.11g. Get a wireless card that conforms to that standard and you'll be on top of the game. (Just ask the salesman at the store to set you up with the "G standard" stuff, and he'll be able to point you toward what you need.)
On edit: The G stuff is all backward compatable, so whatever you get from that category will connect with whatever is available, even if it's the slower standard.

2. As long as there is a Starbucks... |
|
And you have a Starbucks access membership card and a Wireless card, you got a place to do your thang. But then again, a LOT of the better hotels DO have high speed internet. You should tell your travel agent to put you in hotels that have it. and get you great hotel rates, too. Get an 802.11g card, and a regular network card, for your laptop. That way, if you have those and a modem, you are covered for everything on the road.
If you get a wireless router/access point, Look at either the Netgear or the SMC with the integral print server. This will allow you to hook a printer to it, at home, and print wirelessly, from anywhere in the house. Both are excellent, with the SMC having a slight edge.
Lemme know if you need help getting a great price. I would be happy to point you to the best prices on the Net. I don't sell them, but I consult and show people how to get the best prices on hardware.
For you? Such a deal, like you wouldn't believe, for being a mensch. ;-)

3. My Yak has a wireless internet connection. |
|
- And so does my brother, who's an aeronautics and space engineer. Software-wise, he's really jazzed about Intel's XScale PCA, which he uses with a math coprocessor and that enables him to send store and process metric fuckloads of data. If you're looking for hardware recommendations I can pursue that with him on Thursday if I need some way to distract him from eating uncooked pastry dough.
As far as price goes, - I'm thinking it's not out of the reach of the common man, but I don't think it's cheap. I base that assumption entirely on my knowledge of his budget; not yours. ;-)

6. Get a good crypto protection |

I am not a tekkie, but there was a story recently about information on wireless being easily accessible with the proper equipment. Check around.
