The Official "I hate football thread"!
Ok, maybe I'm failing to see the point here, but what IS the point of football? I try watching at least one football game a year. I don't consider myself dense or stupid or anything like that, but everytime I try and watch one of these american football games, I get a headache trying to figure out!

What are they doing? All I see is tackling, a bit of running, tackling again, kicking a couple of times, and bending over every 5 seconds! Is it a man thing, or are there women who appreciate football? Witnessing many men watching football games like my dad and his friends- it's just a lot of grunting at the TV and eating chicken wings?

Anybody else out there who just "doesn't get it"????

Maggie

1. I 'get it' as in understanding the game, I just don't get why anyone likes
to watch it.
Basketball, now THERE'S a sport!

5. It's fun to watch for several reasons
I've been a fan since I was six, but here goes:

a. It's got enough violence to nullify how boring Baseball is
b. the overweight fat people have an important part in the game, and since americans are overweight lardasses, they appreciate a sport that they can identify with
c. nothing is cooler in sports than a tackle that almost kills the poor son of a bitch who gets hit
d. unlike basketball, baseball, and hockey where there are dynasties and shit, the parity is such that any team (with the exception of New Orleans and Cleveland) can win the Super Bowl. New Orleans and Cleveland will never win one ;)

there are other reasons, but i didn't wanna list them

2. agreed....except one or 2 superbowls...
that I found interesting because they were the "big ones."

but yeah, in general, watching football is as intersting as watching the grass grow.

luckily, my boyfriend doesn't care for it either (thank god!)

3. You nailed it - grunting and chicken wings
Actually, lots of women love football; I know many of them. And, lots of men couldn't care less (my wound-too-tight brother, for one). And what's so bad about grunting at the TV and eating chicken wings? It's heaven. I love football, with a passion. Always will, and I say that as a Lions fan (now, that's true love). Will weep profusely at the end of the pro and (especially) college seasons. Enjoy your hobbies and small vices, and leave us fans to ours.

6. EH, nothing to be ashamed of
but the sport just doesn't do anything for me, i prefer to watch the dust collect on top of the tv or something a little more stimulating.

8. OK, so what do you like? Soccer?
What do you enjoy that doesn't make the dust collect for you? Be honest. Knitting? A rousing game of cribbage? Some other Brit sport? (I note you said AMERICAN football. Are you - God help us as the dust collects profusely - a SOCCER fan?)

9. AH HA! You ARE a soccer fan! Why not watch paint dry?
Visited your website. Very nice, but the truth is out. Yes, those interminable 1-0 games are so VERY entertaining! And you have the audacity to criticize "American football?" (dead giveaway, by the way). I feel so vindicated. Look for "The Official 'I hate soccer thread!,' coming soon to a DU site near you. Off to the loo now.

10. .....
Football is all about strategy that's executed with athleticism. It's fine-tuned. It's beautiful. How dare you challenge it?

15. Tut tut. Not so, sir.
We dis her not. SHE has laid out the challenge against the fair playing fields of "American football;" she is free to watch her glorified and underwhelming kickball game, but she has challenged that fair and manly sport of our Elysian fields that gives meaning to so many of our lonely, brief and pathetic lives. Plus, she is the one who dissed chicken wings. Next, it could be beer! We must stop the bleeding here and now. Here I stand. I can do no other.

18. They are not exclusive. We must band together!
The insidious influence of the so-called "sport" of soccer has ruined many a childhood in the past 20 years, when kids could have been off building forts, playing baseball (another American sport), or generally being kids instead of overscheduled automatons. Pork chops and chicken wings must join hands (or whatever)! Not sure about the paintball - one issue at a time.

14. And, you are exposed (and challenged). Cricket, anyone?
You are a soccer fan. Now, when it comes to excitement, you may be fine tuned and beautiful, but a bit addled, when it comes to appreciating sports. Kind of like a well intentioned Bertie Wooster, shall we say? Oh, dash it all.

24. Ah, but you are likely not in your 50s - I accuse ageism!
Played football and many other sports in my younger days. Now, I am ENTITLED to be a spectator (still throw as mean a Frisbee as in the '70s, so there). This is past my bedtime, but I must defend the honour (spelling in honour of our poster) of our American game. And so I am throwing down the gauntlet in this, the approaching holiday season: Plum pudding is overrated, and British food is barely edible, anyway. Yes, I hated to do it, but we "American football" fans must fight them on the land, etc. We will nevah, nevah surrender!

21. And "American" football reaches the depth of my being
Actually, soccer is more spandex oriented. Try the athletic cup section of the sporting goods store for football. And, we're proud of another vital American invention, without which our football games would be - er - more cautiously played! Pip pip, and all that rot.

"Dude?!?" Anyway, some of us prefer protection. Those of us of The Other Gender find spandex - well, shall we say, inadequate.

27. Everyone knows how I feel about football
so I will add this to the debate, a quote by my friend Craig after telling me that he couldn't make it to a gathering because he had to play in the marching band:

"I would go in a heartbeat, if section didn't need me more than football needs ass slapping."

FOOTBALL!!!! :spank: :spank: :spank:

28. So?
You don't like football. I don't like it when others find the need to bash football. Of course, I don't find it any better when others bash soccer or baseball or any other sport, for that matter. Enjoy what you enjoy, and allow others to enjoy what they dig. Why waste time talking about or bashing what doesn't matter to you?
