Wanted: Recommendations for Graphics software for MacOSX
Since Adobe is having issues with Apple, they've lost my business. (I'm not an Apple partisan, but I don't like seeing big corps get into kindergarten snits. Therefore....)

I need a good graphics program, and while I had tried to buy Photoshop, that is a huge hassle with Ebay and the seller right now and blah.

So.... what do you use for image manipulation and what do you recommend about it?

1. I recommend downloading Photoshop using a P2P service (Limewire)
just don't leave the application file in your shared folder and don't register the product… Adobe is notorious for tracking down violators.

5. Yep. Theft is the answer
Good move. Let's put some more Americans out of work.

8. Nope.... I'm a writer, I'm married to a developer. I don't soil the nest.
As much as we both believe that software should not fall under the standard copyright license, as much as we both believe that abandoned ware should be public domain, I don't steal software.

I don't like the massive corps that only pay a small fraction of the purchase price to the author/creator/developer, but we don't have a better system to get the ink to the consumer yet.

So....

Thanks for the suggestion, but no. It violates too many of my own ethics.

It's still the industry standard.

3. What? A little snit turns you off? Photoshop and Apple have
been in bed since the begining of digital time.

Get photoshop. Download it illegally if you must, but get it. There is no substitute.

4. Photoshop is still the stuff...
Adobe has dropped a few Mac programs because of increased competition from Apple. Final Cut Pro pretty much killed Premiere. That is what ticked off Adobe to start (though Adobe dragged their feet on Premiere updates and lost momentum) There's talk about Shake cutting into After Effects' market, but the price difference is keeping that at bay so far...

That said, there is absolutely nothing challenging Photoshop at this point. Photoshop sells a LOT of Macs, and I seriously doubt Apple will market a competing product. Same for Illustrator. If you can find a way to get Photoshop, buy it.

If you're adamant, there's not much else out there. Linux and Windows users can go for GIMP (www.gimp.org) which is a free Photoshop wannabe. Not sure if it's been ported to OSX or not... other than that... I dunno.

7. GIMP is free
it's maybe equivalent to Photoshop 4. You can download it free from the Fink project.
http://fink.sourceforge.net/
but you must have X11 installed to run it.

10. People are still looking for those who use Photoshop, Illustrator
It's a constant in the industry, and people know when you use something less.
