Anyone with an antiwar group may want to read this!

WASHINGTON (Nov. 22) -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation has collected extensive information on the tactics, training and organization of antiwar demonstrators and has advised local law enforcement officials to report any suspicious activity at protests to its counterterrorism squads, according to interviews and a confidential bureau memorandum.

The memorandum, which the bureau sent to local law enforcement agencies last month in advance of antiwar demonstrations in Washington and San Francisco, detailed how protesters have sometimes used "training camps" to rehearse for demonstrations, the Internet to raise money and gas masks to defend against tear gas. The memorandum analyzed lawful activities like recruiting demonstrators, as well as illegal activities like using fake documentation to get into a secured site.

The initiative has won the support of some local police, who view it as a critical way to maintain order at large-scale demonstrations. Indeed, some law enforcement officials said they believed the F.B.I.'s approach had helped to ensure that nationwide antiwar demonstrations in recent months, drawing hundreds of thousands of protesters, remained largely free of violence and disruption.

But some civil rights advocates and legal scholars said the monitoring program could signal a return to the abuses of the 1960's and 1970's, when J. Edgar Hoover was the F.B.I. director and agents routinely spied on political protesters like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

12. They are WAY worse than McCarthy
They ARE the government. McCarthy was a loose cannon, albeit a very influential one. Bush and Ashcroft are the establishment. A very evil and dangerous establishment to be sure.

4. You can't post more than 4 paragraphs or you violate DU rules...
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 12:22 AM by jchild
besides, this is old news--has been in LBN since yesterday.

Also, the link you posted in another forum is bad.

You need to reduce this article to 4 paragraphs or it will get locked.

9. You can't bend them at DU.
DU rules state that you can't post more than 4 paragraphs. The reason is that mods don't have time to check with site owners to make sure it's ok if you borrow their work.

Just the way it is. :-)

7. Please, everybody be careful with what you say on the boards
And remember the old addage: Just because you are paranoid, it doesn't prove they aren't really out to get you.

Thanks for the informative post, Lady Freedom. Hope the younger members of our community here read it and mull it over next time some low-count poster baits us into discussions like 'what will you do in case of martial law...' If they bait you into saying you would take up arms against the government, they can haul you off. Heads up out there.

10. Being part of a antiwar group that may be under the "gun" as it were...
Makes it where you do get a little paranoid. Consitering how many "suits" have been on our very diverse campus lately!

13. Ah, the memories of college during Nixon...
Even on a tiny, rural Calif campus of what was then a fly speck of a Community College, we were treated to the regular presence of 'the suits'.

I recall when Dennis Weaver came to speak for George McGovern... the suits were taking names and guessing the affiliations of those listening. They were very interested in the guys in the black berets and the brown berets... I drove them nuts strutting around in my red beret, white jersey and blue hot pants... They were trying so hard to figure out what group the red beret signified, they missed the point of the other colors I wore.

There are lots of nasty control freaks out there and they mean us harm. Tis good to keep that in mind.

Hells bells, my husband can't even get the cheese he wants because of the Patriot Act! Like certain French blues are WMDs or something! If they are gonna start picking on CHEESE they need to be watched.

16. Low count does not equal freep baiter, havocmom.
Please drop the elitism and realize that not all of us had the sheer luck to stumble onto DU when it was new, the time to post when we did discover, or the interest in becoming a top-poster as quick as we could.

Just because we're new doesn't mean we're complete imbeciles when it comes to netiquette and the ability to think.....

Politicat (who is quite proud of her +/-300 posts but remembers having an all digits compuserve address when it was billed by the minute.... and had a 6 digit ICQ number.)

there is a dark history of using agent provacatures in America and I simply want those of us who weren't around to deal with them in the 60's to be aware of the tactic. Whenever there is a post like this one: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=761446&mesg_id=761446 , I am concerned that people are exposing themselves to serious trouble when they respond with comments about taking up arms and civil war.

So drop the assumption that you know what my motives and bigotries are and we might just find we have more in common than you think. I haven't been here at DU that long either, and my spelling and typos are terrible; I know what it is like to be suspect around here ;) Just want the people I am in the trenches with here at DU to be able to remain out of the net being cast to snag any "enemy combatants". Patriot Act gives the control freak neocons a lot of ways to hurt us all. There are really nasty people out there and many of the good ones are innocent enough that they don't realize just how much danger they might be in.

Peace and prosperity to you

edit: the mentioned tendency toward chronic typos
(and need for caffine)

hehe! Hope that I didn't ruffle your feathers there, Sting! I just think it is funny that the FBI would want to watch all of us instead of some of the other more danger filled groups. Like Diddo heads!

20. You can take
You can take Raygun and his bunch of scandalous cheats, and you can take Tricky Dick and his coterie of constitutional cheats and put them all together and they still wouldn't be as scary or as dangerous as the "Presidick" and his cronies. We MUST mobilize to thwart his bid (rig) for re-selection. I know that this country will survive if he is re-selected, but at what irreparable cost? Just how much more damage can we endure?

People should be able to protect themselves.

I'll have to remember that.
