5. I don't really know.
I've only seen it depicted in movies like, 'The Contender'. I don't think it exists anymore.

To me, it means trying your best to be straight up in all your dealings with your fellow human beings, owning up to your mistakes, dealing with the consequences of your actions, and learning from them.

12. I must disagree
First, welcome to DU :toast:

It is not up to others to bring honesty and integrity out of individuals. It is up to an individual to practice honesty and integrity to begin with.

15. Thanks, but honesty is earned, not given
First, to be allowed the internal honesty of another you must have an understanding of the person giving it. To understand the one that you wish to be honest with you it will take an act or mutual agreement that you can be trusted with such an exposure of anothers thoughts.

Honestly, an honest person is hard to find only if you are hiding your true feelings and being dishonest with yourself and those you don't trust.

16. I wonder ...........
In the light of Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Andersen and others too numerous to mention...... can anyone tell me if MBA's hear anything about these values in their course of study? I wonder if they go into it seriously or is it skimmed over with a wink and a grin just to say they did indeed cover the topic of business ethics. It depresses me knowing the kind of world I'm handing down to my grandkids.

28. I think that is what it means
it just seems to me that honesty and integrity are pretty self explanatory.

Just be honest - how hard is that?

And if you fuck up, admit it and apologize if appropriate - how hard is that?

30. It isn't hard...
...but some people don't like to admit they were wrong, or they screwed up. Some people don't like to apologize either.

Looks like you and I are learning the same lesson at the same time, hon.

38. Ya know what FC?
My feeling is who even cares about the admissions of guilt or screwing up or the apologies. It's really more important what you are telling yourself.

If you fuck up or take a misstep and can't even admit that to yourself, then there is a far bigger problem than whatever the fuck up was to begin with.

29. Integrity is a concept I think about all the time
When Buckminster Fuller was asked how the earth can survive - he said it could only survive if we live with integrity.
By this I think he meant that not only do we have to live with principles but we have to make decisions using our "whole and entire" knowledge. That is a challenge and sometimes diffficult.

But to actually accomplish that - one is then honest.

31. Walk tall, shoot straight, and tell the truth.
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 03:20 AM by DoNotRefill
Never promise something you might not be able to deliver. Never embellish the truth. If you're selling something, underdescribe it's condition, so that the purchaser is extra-happy when he or she gets the item. If something rankles you, SOUND OFF.

If you mess up, own up to it, and FIX IT. No weaseling out.

How simple is that??

37. Honesty and integrity
Honesty is the ability to admit reality, no matter how much you'd rather it were different, and to tell the truth to yourself and others.

Integrity is doing the right thing simply because it is *right*, without regard to reward or punishment.

And by the way, honesty and integrity do still exist, in individuals.... but we are becoming more and more rare as those without take advantage of us and make our lives harder....

42. Honesty and Integrity
Just about everything you have can be taken away from you with only a few exceptions.

Your honor and integrity can ONLY be given away, if you choose to do so.

Is there anyone here willing to just give that away?

47. There is only one thing that can be taken from any one person
And that is their life. Once you accept that your life end is the worse thing that can happen to you then you will have mastered the art of living. Everything between your beginning and end is to be relished and used to make the temporary chemical reaction as pleasant and controlled as possible. Twenty two thousand days is unmeasurabal when placed into the circumference of an infinite circle. Enjoy it and try not to let any of your time be owned by another.
