Advanced studies show that 6 out of 7 cats like catnip (PHOTO WARNING)
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 11:52 PM by kedrys
By popular demand, here are the results of tonight's catnip distribution:

Evie: MINE MINE MINE I tell you!!!

Socrates: Ooo, the good stuff!

Imhotep: where can an old guy like me, a regular joe, catch some cheap thrills? In front of the fridge, that's where!

Quark: Yes, I remember this...human slackers only give us this twice a year...

Plato: I'll just rub this all over my body and work on my manicure for 2 hours.

Caesar: I wonder if it'll hatch if I incubate it long enough...

Neutrino: You're all acting like moronskis, you know that, right?

End of scientific report.

:P

13. My girl kitty didn't want to share her catnip toys
with the little orange tabby boy I rescued. So I went out and bought him one of the burlap bags. Left him with it for maybe 15 minutes. Returned to find catnip everywhere and Ollie sprawled out with huge dilated eyes. He was hilarious. Loved to eat the stuff, not just rub against it.

18. Evie is one of the prettiest cats I've ever seen
Plato is all ass. The vet swears he's not fat, but when Plato sits down, it's like a bowling ball with feet and ears. Or a really really big tribble with same. :D He's actually quite muscular, but he does have a bit of spare in his undercarriage.

16. Rescues, all of them
Caesar's the oldest, just turned 14. Plato, Socrates and Evie are littermates, and will turn 5 next April (already!). Quark and Neutrino turned 3 this summer (brother and sister) - their dad Imhotep is 7 or 8, we're not sure. Imhotep may also be the father of the triplets.

They are cute, aren't they? :)

24. gorgeous
I have an 8 year old rescue named Clancy, and a brand new 6 month injured kitty who was so elusive I had to order a feral trap over the internet to catch him.....got him treated, fixed, and at the current moment I cannot find his new hiding place in my apartment. :o

19. She was at it again this morning
I heard scratching noises in the bedroom, and when I looked, she was doing the backstroke across the floor with a bag of catnip in her hands.

15. Great pics of cats "on the nip"
I'll come home sometimes and ask "where's the cat"

"Oh, she's on the nip" She'll be curled up under a chair, rubbing her head against the bag much like the picture of Plato.

21. It was sort of an early holiday present
We're going out of town Saturday, and I bought the 'nip bags a few weeks ago. Figured it was a good night to turn loose of the goodies and snap a few shots.

One of our friends is house-sitting for us, so the critters won't be upended.

22. Statistically, half of all cats love the stuff
The other half is frosty. Neutrino is the only one of the horde who doesn't care for it - her brother, dad, and cousins all love the stuff. Since sensitivity to catnip is genetically determined, it's interesting to see who likes it and who doesn't when you have a whole crew of related cats. :)

23. Is that stuff actually safe?
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 10:17 AM by C_eh_N_eh_D_eh
I hear all these stories about how crazy cats can get over catnip. Is there any evidence as to whether it's addictive?

I hope to have a cat someday (I can't until I move out, for health reasons), and being firmly against recreational drugs, I'd like to know whether or not I should expose him/her to this shit. We've done enough damage to the feline species through centuries of brainwashing and selective breeding. Do we really need to keep them drugged and strung out, too?

25. Actually, yes
Catnip is a distant relative of mint, and no cat has ever suffered lingering or long-term effects from it, at least not anywhere I've read - and I've looked. It basically makes them goofy for about 10-15 minutes, and then they're back to normal.

Mine don't act strung out, or drugged - just kicks them up a notch (except for Neutrino, who doesn't care about the stuff).

Chances are 1 in 2 that you'll get a catnip-negative cat, in which case you have nothing to worry about.

28. can the same catnip be reapplied for more 'dosages'?
like, squeezing the sachel pack to release more fragrance and get them high again?

... i think getting a cat high will be oodles of fun... i'm thinking about a garden of intoxicants if i ever get a house with a back yard of my own. something to intoxicate all my pets...

wait! humans can count as pets, right?

and what gets a dog, snake, guinea pig, and bat high? i'm going to need to know this for landscaping in the future... fermented oats and rye makes cows and other livestock happy, but i have no desire for livestock.

29. Yes - one of the advantages of using the burlap bag delivery system
They bite and suck on it and get some catnip juice out of it, I guess. The smell is mostly an attractant. The kitties use them once in a while - I leave them on the floor and let the cats do with them as they will. Once the bags get all warped and gross, I toss 'em out and get new ones.

As it is, she's the designated "I'll live in the coffee table until Socrates stops trying to wash me" cat. :D
