Can't find symbol á
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 12:05 AM by quinnox
Where is the symbol that is covering the "a" here, á, located on the keyboard? I can only find this one - ` - which is leaning the other direction. How I got this symbol was simply copying and pasting this letter from an online dictionary, but I can't find this symbol on the keyboard.

make sure you use the numbers on the keypad.

Check out the Windoze character map... you'll get the ASCI codes for all those suckers there.

é is alt + 0233
ñ is alt + 0241
á is alt + 0225

5. oh yeah... you can even find umlauts there.
and sedillas. The pound sterling symbol, degree -- ° (alt + 0176) and a gazillion others. I have those memorized, others I still need to look up.

6. accented a?
that works for Spanish, but... I looked it up. It's acute. The one pointing the other way is called grave. (ague and grav in French, I think)

10. they way to remember which is which...
"grav" or "Grave" points to the grave (down) as you read from left to right.

11. I've forgotten...
but if you see that over an a, or anything but an "e", it's usually from Irish and/or Gaelic. Here's a verse of the Irish national anthem...you can see that symbol over just about every different vowel.

"Amhrán na bhFiann
Seo dhibh a cháirde duan óglaigh,
Cathréimeach briomhar ceolmhar,
ár dtinte cnámh go buacach táid,
'S an spéir go min réaltogach
Is fonnmhar faobhrach sinn chun gleo
'S go tiúnmhar glé roimh thíocht do'n ló
Fé chiúnas chaomh na hoiche ar seol:
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann "

I want to say it's called a fada, but I can't remember, and I'm too lazy to try and find out for sure right now.

My air name on WICB-Ithaca is DJ §eismic. Yes, the alt-0167 character is part of the name. Yes, it's still pronounceable.
