Has anyone seen Master & Commander ?
I saw it yesterday and was blown away. I never read any of Patrick O'Brien's books, but remember selling them by the boatload when I worked at a bookstore. This movie was amazing !!

Another fabulous performance by Russell Crowe ! Oscar worthy indeed.

1. Crowe...Nicholson
I think Crow is as good and actor as Jack Nicholson. He "becomes" the character insead of just acting. Look at his diversity in just a few films: GLADIATOR, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, LA CONFIDENTIAL, THE INSIDER--WOW!

5. Check last weekend's posts
There was plenty of chatter about it. Personaly, I thought Johnny Depp was theee actor of the year (Pirates). Then I saw Mr. Crowe as theee Commander! Great job by both guys.

6. It's a good one !
With the opening scenes of the ocean, I wondered if I would get seasick! (Didn't.)

I usually do not like gore, but in this film the focus was not on the gore -- not that I liked seeing it, but it was just there as part of the reality.

I thought Crowe portrayed Aubrey as a warmer character than I perceived him to be in the books, where he seemed pretty repressed.

Definitely worth viewing more than once.

7. The movie rocks -- It really brought the Age of Sail to life!
What is it about wooden ships with sails that has the romanticism that modern ships never can have?

8. It's that old phrase "wooden ships and iron men". . .
...and women, too!!

Somehow, a "modern" ship with electronic gadgets galore blinds people to the fact that the water out there can still play hardball. I think one realizes that more on a wooden sailing vessel, whether a simple sloop or a "tall ship". You also get a grasp of the amount of teamwork that is essential on those babies.

The "romanticism" that is often talked about is a foil for the fact that operating these vessels involve a helluva lot of HARD WORK!!!
Not just to sail the vessel, but it's upkeep!!

I should know. In my younger years, I've done some crewing and maintenance on wooden vessels; as a member of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and sister organizations.

I also belong to the American Sail Training Association. www.tallships.sailtraining.org
