http://www.evolvefish.com/fish/product337.htmlMuch of America is poverty-mired: 34 million living below the poverty line. In the words of one of my favourite activist commercials, "Poverty: America's forgotten state."
Suppose we suddenly had no poverty, say the income from everyone's jobs magically began to pay all their expenses. Would we be happy? Would it last? No, I don't believe so. The robberbarrons and their minions would see an opportunity to take more of the proletariats cash through simple profit margin enhancement strategies. The goverment would see the opportunity to raise taxes to fund more supposed altruistic activities. The proletariats themselves would spend more on TVs, VCRs, game consoles, cars, clothes, restaurants, cigarettes, alcohol, smack, and hash.
In short, our society of ill-restraint and of consuming greed ensures we will always be "poor." The poverty state is a psychological, not an economic, problem.
As you live in a "little city," you have a better chance of starting the reform and seeing results in your lifetime. All of us in small to medium size cities do. So, get out there on the street at night. Have Boy Scouts camp in the city park. Encourage theaters to show later at night movies. Attend your city council meetings, speaking eloquently on making the town stronger through education then economy. Etc.
