The town is located on a site that was geographically hard to develop as a tourista spot. When the Mexican government started it's resort building campaign (+/- 30 yrs ago) they Took over a plantation about 10 miles north. This became Ixtapa, your standard, cookie cutter, glitzy commercial Mexican resort spot. The small town flavor & Mexican culture is still intact in little Zihuatanejo, which is a day's drive south of crowded Acapulco.
