Mixed feelings about the holidays |
|
I don't celebrate Christmas, but my mother and brother do, and I was planning to go see them over the weekend. But the car has a problem that makes it unsafe to drive so far. I called my mother, and she nearly cried-seems she has just found out the reason she is having trouble with her eyesight is that blood isn't getting to her optic nerve, and she is going blind. Nothing she can do about it.
I am glad we discovered the car problem before we either broke down on the road or had a wreck, and I'm glad I don't have to be there when everyone is celebrating Christmas-funny how one can have less in common with one's own family than one's friends and acquaintences-but I am feeling bad about my mother. But she does have my brother and his entire family, I tell myself.
God willing, I'll be able to take time off work and see her soon--while she can still see me.
