What do you think of your local TV news?
I can't stand mine, here in NYC, for the most part. NY1 (24-hour cable news) is okay, but I sense creeping happy-talkism.

2. They're OK.
I don't watch the network affiliate news that often. Here in Austin, Time Warner Cable has a 24 hour news service that is pretty good at capturing the main stories going on locally. They have weather every 10 minutes too, which is convenient.

7. NY1 is Time Warner
and they do news the way all local news should be done. They cover city politics better than anyone. They also have some excellent journalists who just deliver the facts. Entertainment news is at a minimum--they don't report on who's leading on American Idol or Survivor, for instance. But there a few goofballs who do "human interest stories" in the ubiquitously glib style that has become the signature of local news everywhere.

3. utterly vapid here in Philly
Starts out with the days shootings, robberies, etc. then snaps right into sports and weather. And of course, these days it's loaded with all kinds of "health news" and "consumer reports".

5. Only watch for special occasions
One channel is good at reporting special situations like inclement weather, travel info and school closings an so on. Or if there is some special event happening I'll tune it.

The weather guy is usually funny. I tune in to see him at 20 after the hour.

Otherwise, I skip the nightly litany of murders, stabbings, robberies, and highway accidents. I would tune in more if they covered minicipal and local government more.

6. I have no problem with mine ...
I watch the local NBC affiliate. I consider them fair and balanced ... OK, stop friggin laughing ... I use this term seriously ... OK, stop friggin laughing.

The reason I consider them fair and balnced (I heard a snicker), is that I am completely clueless as to their political leanings. If they are politcally motivated, they certainly hide it well.

Cheers
Drifter

8. They're soooo melodramatic...
They blow everything out of proportion and make you think that every time the wind blows or there's a drop of rain coming down, the sky is falling. There is a family that pretty much rules all three channels here in oklahoma, the Ogles. They are really great guys, but oh my god, they are show queens. And I won't even say anything about the women...they are million times worse than the guys.

and idiots who shake their heads as they're reading the Bleeding Lead off the teleprompter.

10. We get that melodrama crap...
...here in the winter when snow is on the way. You'd think the end of the orld was coming.

"Tonight's big story, SNOW!!!"

What the hell. Every winter I find myself thinking, "wait a minute, didn't it snow LAST winter and the winter before that and the winter before that..."

11. This is true in Texas.
Every year we get the following:

1. At first freeze - "Here's what to do so your pipes don't freeze, bring your plants and pets inside, blah, blah, blah"
2. When ice is predicted - "Shots of the kitty litter the highway department spreads on the roads. Reporters saying, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STAY HOME - THE WORLD IS ENDING!!! STAY HOME!!!!!"
3. When it rains heavily - Hey, watch those low-lying areas, and don't drive through moving water.

All this crap pisses me off, but there are always people who don't listen...

13. GOP, that same crap happens here...
If you've lived in Oklahoma, Texas, or anywhere where it has EVER snowed, rained, iced, or stormed, you know what to do to keep your stuff safe and keep yourself alive...but don't tell that to the news channels. They must target five year olds who live in a van down by the river with their illiterate fathers and their crack whore moms. S

Los Angeles has a vast selection.

My favorites are KCAL 9 (IND) and KCBS 2

14. Amateurs and Bush cheerleaders, they suck
Local news has been on the downturn for quite some time now. Since the conglomerates could own more than one media outlet. All rah, rah, support our troops and our president. Yuck

3 stations here in Tampa Bay and they all follow the same tact.

They piss me off too , but seem to spend more time on
important issues rather than "Attack of the Sharks etc."

16. Albany NY leave a lot to be desired
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 04:16 PM by LuLu550
I work in a school and one of our students was critically injured in an accident. The dipshits on TV said he died....I called the station (I'm the school's PR person and identified myself as such) told them our kids were having a hard enough time dealing with the situation without them giving out false information....they denied having done it....and never ran a correction!

some kids came in crying because if it was "on TV it must be true" even though the principal told them the kid was stating to respond.

20. WPXI Pittsburgh SUCKS!!!!! but...
...in general they are all bad here.

I remember after 9/11 when we had the Federal Building bomb scares, they evacuated a few city blocks, and all the reporters sent to the scene were black.

WPXI used to have this AM "news reader". She was terrible. I remember once she was recapping a party from the night before, and read straight from the transcript. There was a clip of a jazz trio, and she said "wow can he play that bass", but she pronounced it like the fish, not the instrument.

The best was the rookie female anchor's first month on the morning news. At the end of the broadcast, she was shuffling her papers and chatting like they always do before they cut the cameras, and she sent her papers flying. To make matters worse, she bent over to pick them up, and all you could see over the desk was the back of her head above her male co-anchor's lap. He co-anchor had the look of deer in headlights. Hilarious!

Later,
JM

21. Car Wrecks and Police Blotter stories....
Oh, and "hard-hitting" multi-part tales about a convicted child molestor who's been banned from city parks, even though he never met any of his victims in a park.....

I was surprised to learn that. I thought the guy had been haunting playgrounds....Logical, no?

Anyway, it pretty much is useful for answering "I wonder what that wreck I saw on the way home/to work was all about?" questions and that's it.

it's all small town hick stuff, and since we're a small town, we're run by hardcore right-wingers. So I usually tune into BBC on cable to find out the latest world news.

23. Goofy losers in Denver!
On 9NEWS (NBC) a week or so ago, the weather guy was having a quiz on a type of cloud, and the first three choices were recognizable names of clouds. The fourth was supposed to be "cumulous ____," but for some reason it only said "cum" on the screen!! I almost died laughing!!

On top of that - all five local news channels are a bunch of blind Bushies who can't pronounce the words on the teleprompter and try to make up stupid jokes/anecdotes as segues into the next story that FAIL!

The CBS affiliate is vapid, but the ABC and NBC affiliates actually have real reporters! :)

25. Ok, let's give this a try (given that I don't much watch Corporate TV
Pravda very uch any more)

Catchy tune begins
Murders
Fires (preferably where someone dies)
Child Abuse
Robberies
3 min. of soundbite National "news" -- it might be that Michael Jackson is on instead of the Emperor, but it is all the same
Sports (perhaps the section of Corporate TV Pravda I most like, but if I want that I can flick on local sports channel anytime)
Weather
Fluff

"News" over.
