Geography DU-ers: Illinois quiz--- test your wits!
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 06:31 PM by Padraig18
Although I'm not native-born, like Abraham Lincoln I have come to love deeply my adopted state and it's peoples. As a result, I'm fascinated by it's history, geography, etc., and do a great deal of reading about all things 'Illinoisan'.

That said, let's get on with the questions; I'll post the correct answers and the source later on.

1.) When did Illinois become a state?

2.) What is now on the site of the O'Leary cottage in Chicago?

3.) What are the three nicknames for Illinois?

4.) What rank among the states is Illinois in corn production?

5.) Where does Illinois rank in agricultural exports?

6.) Where does Illinois rank in manufactured goods exports?

7.) In which Chicago park is a famous statue of Abraham Lincoln located?

8.) What is the southermost city in Illinois?

9.) What is the northernmost city in Illinois?

10.) Where is the terminus (city) of The National Road, which started in Cumberland, MD?

11.) What gift did King Louis XV of France make to the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Kaskaskia Island, the 1st such item west of the Appalachians?

12.) Near what city are Abraham Lincoln's father and step-mother buried?

13.) What is the only town in the US named for a future President?

14.) What were the only 2 public buildings to survive the Chiago Fire?

15.) What part of Illinois lies west of the Mississippi River?

Have fun! :hi:

Chicago Fire Academy is at the O'Leary site

I'll take one correct - and run!

:-)

Do we consider the 14 thousand acre Kaskaskia Island as west of the Mississippi - I guess so.

as to Lincoln statue - which is famous among the five?

Lincoln Park - Standing Lincoln
Garfield Park - The Railsplitter ,
Senn Park -Young Lincoln
Lincoln Square has the "Chicago Lincoln"
Grant Park has the Sitting Lincoln

But this could be worse

Waukegan - meaning little fort

Chicago - meaning marsh that stinks from onion weed

sigh....

:-)

and you could have asked about the Milwaukee Road RR.

or the fact that the old train from Waukegan to Chicago (not the NorthWestern!!!!) was heated by a tiny coal furnace that they stopped firing up in the 50's - it was cold!
