I just bought an old ( and I mean old ) car |
|
1976 Honda Civic with 83,000 miles (verified). It has points and a carb and is the smallest car I've ever seen. It sat in the back of a ranchers driveway for many, many years, but runs great. The interior needs work. People are chuckling in my direction as they see me drive by.
I got it to have something to play with on the days off. Maybe improve the old self esteem a little. I may someday be able to say to anyone who might care - See - look - I fixed up a crapper of a car, and now it's not quite so crappy.
Am I nuts?
Do you have an old car you are slowly, or quickly, bringing back from the dead?

I once had a 1972 Volkswagen Bus that I was fixing up--even learned to oxyacetylene weld on sheet metal on that bus, and the welds were looking good. Then my house got annexed into the city and they made me get rid of it because it wasn't registerable.
I drove a 1974 Super Beetle from 1995 until about two months ago. There was something wrong between the carb and the fuel pump (occasionally it would decide to run the float bowl dry and stall in traffic--not safe!), and I didn't have time to fix it, so I bought a 1986 Honda Accord LX-i to replace it. Sold the Bug for $325 to a kid who I made promise to buy a new carb and new fuel pump for it post haste. He did, and now he runs all over town in it, just happier than all get out. I see him all over the place with this big ol' grin on his face.
The Accord needs a little work--just got done with the clutch, need to mess with the exhaust a little (it's not leaking, but it has a nice "you could really use a new muffler, the guts in this one are not doing too well" sound to it), that kind of thing. Needs some body work. Could use a door--big dent in one of them. Nothing too major. Needs a seat sewn up. It's quick.

sslllooowwllly coming around. i have times of boundless energy, offset by times of lackadaisical concern for the process. But it's fun all the same.
peace, and good luck with the Accord. dp

Having something to tool around with when it's NOT your primary means of transportation is loads of fun. Especially when its something that has been left for dead, and you coax life out of the engine again. It's most fun when you don't really know what you are doing.
A great stress reliever too. I always suggest women at least try this kind of hobby.

Those were the ones that made Honda such a big deal over here-very reliable.
83,000 miles? That's great condition. I have a 97 Mazda and it already has over 90,000 on it.

6. I have a 1962 Volswagen Bus |

with the original engine. I've had it for 13 years. Only drive it around town. It wasn't running at all when I got it and had a lot wrong with it but I found an excellent VW mechanic who got him going and I've been keeping him alive ever since. Never had the money to fix him up but I love him and he has such a will to keep going.

I'm looking for another engine. I love this car, though. It's a nifty little 4WD wagon and I want to keep it for at least another five years. (fingers crossed)

8. My everyday car is an 87 Toyota Corolla |
|
and I love it. Came with complete maintenance records, no rust and 104k. I had to do brakes, tuneup, tires and it will need CV joints but it is great transportation for the 500$. I have decided I am much happier paying less than 1K for a vehicle and will drive it as long as it lasts. I plan on driving this one a long time. The wife drives a new van and that is the family vehicle, but I have no problem taking the Toytota across the 20 miles of country roads to work. Good for you - that Honda is a great car.

The interior roof needs help, and the front seats are goners, but the rest is in good shape.
