Dead Man Comes Alive In Morgue
<snip>

A MAN was moved from a hospital morgue in Portugal to a care unit after he was heard coughing several hours after a doctor declared the 95-year-old dead.

Family members called an ambulance to bring Manuel Lino to a public hospital in the town of Abrantes, 120 km northeast of Lisbon, on December 1 because he was not feeling well, daily Jornal de Noticias said.
When Mr Lino arrived at the hospital the doctor who examined him inside of the ambulance said he could not find a pulse and ordered his body sent to the morgue, it added.

"With great pain we left him there and returned home where we started preparing the funeral," Mr Lino's stepson-in-law, Joao Baco said.

Later that same day the family received a telephone call from an emergency services worker informing them that Mr Lino was alive after all, Mr Baco said.

"We can't understand how someone can make a mistake like this, causing so much pain to a family," he added.

Mr Lino, who was bedridden before being taken to the hospital, was discharged on December 7 and spent Christmas with his family, Mr Baco said.

Hospital officials said they had opened an inquiry into the incident.

1. Someone invented a coffin with bells and escape hatch
back in the day when embalming wasn't done, just for cases like this.

"The nature of this invention consists in placing on the lid of the coffin, and directly over the face of the body laid therein, a square tube, which extends from the coffin up through and over the surface of the grave, said tube containing a ladder and a cord, one end of said cord being placed in the hand of the person laid in the coffin, and the other end of said cord being attached to a bell on the top of the square tube, so that, should a person be interred ere life is extinct, he can, on recovery to consciousness, ascend from the grave and the coffin by the ladder; or, if not able to ascend by said ladder, ring the bell, thereby giving an alarm, and thus save himself from premature burial and death; and if, on inspection, life is extinct, the tube is withdrawn, the sliding door closed, and the tube used for a similar purpose. . . 2. I have also read about coffins
that had rockets attached to them for the same purpose....which makes one wonder, what if you set the thing off in the middle of the night and no one noticed.....that has GOT to be the worst fear ever, awakening in a sealed coffin with all that dirt up on top of you. *shudder*

3. The criminals use that type of coffin in one of their cons in
The Great Train Robbery.

"I knew it wasn't the cholera!"

It's awesome.
