I'm Going to Rome Tomorrow. What Should I See Aside From
the usual tourist crap?

I'd love to see Berlusconi and tell him what a jackass he is for aligning himself with Bush and causing the deaths of Italian soldiers, but I'm on vacation.

Aside from the Vatican, Colliseum and other typical tourist sights, what should I do? I am waking up at the crack of dawn and going to the Porta Portese (flea market) on Sunday.

I can't wait to go on vacation!!!!

1. Bring them some left-wing magazines
they don't have a free media there. Also, tell them about PNAC.

2. Walk up the Via Veneto at dusk.
It is a beautiful street. Look up at ceilings in churches and museums -- they are a sight unto themselves. If you walk through the Borghese Gardens, check to see if they still dump used condoms on the roadway (it has been years since I was in Rome, but I still remember that well, LOL.) Walk the streets in the neighborhoods and see how the people live. I don't know how long you are going to be there, but take some time away from the usual tourist crap.

3. Oh Wow, Rome!
Rome more or less demonstrates that Fellini made documentaries...

6. See the catacombs
Just outside town. If you have a Let's Go book the details will be in there. Truly fascinating.

7. I'm there for a week
I'm sure I'll get arted out after a few days. I bought comfy shoes for walking.

I was thinking of going to Ostia Antica or Hadrian's Villa if I have time-they're outside the city.

We'll see-I just might wander, like I do in most European cities.

I'm sure the Italian guys will leave me alone-I'm not 22 anymore. ;-)

10. Italian men flirt with older women, too! They also stare. A lot.

I love Italy at this time of year as there are lots fewer tourists. Buon viaggio!

Actually, look out for the scooters is more like it.

Enjoy!

9. I enjoyed San Clemente Church
You can descend below the church and see an early altar to Mithra. It's fascinating to see how the Christian churches built upon the earlier temples.

I also loved just sitting at the fountains and watching folks. Rome has so many statues and fountains that you can find treasures all around. My favorite tourist site was the Pantheon and a monastery that was open for only a few months when we were there. I used the DK Guide with all the pictures.

One warning, you do not want to walk to the top of St Peters if you are claustrophobic. I still have nightmares about it.

11. Campo del Fiori
The market. (It is a typical tourist site, but nice.)

Oh, there are so many things to see, but check that out. You can go eat pasta carbonara at the place that originated it (that is, if pasta with bacon is your thing!). Have a BLAST and throw a coin in the Trevi fountain for me - I shall return to Roma one day.

15. Get the book "Angels and Demons"
and retrace Robert Langdon's steps (without the grisly murders)

Walk the Appia Antiqua.
Also, find the most out of the way trattorias and enjoy the vino!

Have a great time!
