incest begins at home
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
My crystal ball shows a whole raft of Alabama jokes headed our way.
<sigh>

Theodore man married his biological daughter Mobile authorities say

(MOBILE, Ala.) July 25 – Carrol Eugene Ferdinandsen, 53, and his wife, Alice Fay, 30, were arrested Thursday and charged with incest, according to The Mobile Register.

The couple, who have also been charged with fraud in connection with their May 2 civil marriage in Mobile County, are being held in metro jail. Bond has been set at $8,500 each.

Family members that have heard of the marriage said they disapprove.
(Possibly the understatement of the week?-trof)

And if that wasn't bad enough:
Incest couple charged with animal abuse

July 25, 2003 - This father-daughter couple are also accused of animal cruelty -- a crime some neighbors find harder to accept than incest.

(MOBILE, Ala.) July 25 -- You could call it a family affair. A mobile county couple married only two months ago are now behind bars. That's because, according to police, the groom is also the father of the bride.

But incest is not the only charges this couple faces. Alice and Carroll Ferdinandsen are also accused of animal cruelty, a crime some neighbors find harder to accept than their original charges.

2. Oh yeah, that flag always promises a good story
not just some garden variety story but one that seems to have extra bizarre twists.

And, yes trof, expect a raft of Alabama jokes. We Texans like having some of the nation's curiosity and ability to make jokes at the expense of others shifted from our excesses to what are apparently yours....

(its the neighbor outrage over the animal abuse vs. the marriage that is so highly amusing!)

3. how come...
incest is more common in the RED (read Repuglican) parts of the country like the South?

Also, Divorce rate is significantly higher in these areas...

Hmmm...aren't these good old conservative states the upholders of morality?

4. I honestly don't know.

I'd never thought of it as a political thing.
More of an intelligence/education thing.

Here's a little tale that I really don't know what to make of.
I have some cousins in a very rural part of the state. Three generations ago they were well educated, community leaders. Doctors, lawyers, judges, state legislators, etc.

Each succeeding generation has dumbed down. The current batch of 20-30 somethings, while financially able to go to college, scorned it. This, in turn, has earned them the scorn of their grandparents. I've tried to talk to the "youngsters" about it, but never get any reasonable answers. It's like to them (the men, mainly) higher education is some kind of effete (a word they don't know) "sissy" thing. They're a bunch of super-macho guys. I just don't get it.

on edit-welcome to DU.
:hi:

5. Don't feel too bad, Alabama.
Here in South Mississippi last year a man was convicted of screwing a horse. The horse's owner noticed that his buckets were overturned when he went into the stable. He thought kids were up to some mischief in there, so he decided to install a video camera to catch them. He got a little surprise when he rolled back the tape. So if incest is Alabama's cross to bear, I guess bestiality belongs to Mississippi.

I thought it was a bit odd, though that the guy got 18 months for doing the horse. A lot of people don't get that much time for molesting a child. Of course it's sick and all, but I think they went a little overboard in that case. From what I've seen of horses and how they're endowed, I'm sure that mare didn't feel a thing.

I wonder if stories like this are true. With his new reputation, this guy will be getting free drinks for the next 15 years.

Did the mare enjoy it? "Neigh-h-h-h!"

Just read the story.

"Circuit Judge Jerry O. Terry ordered Brown to avoid contact with the horse."

Gee, what about all the OTHER fillies in the neighborhood?

8. God, not another south bashing thread
Yes, bestiality and incest does happen in the south...and in the east, west, and north.

It's not peculiar to this area...c'mon guys, quit bashing the south.

Bash the people who did it, but don't cast a wide net as if we all indulge in such aberrant behavior.

10. I don't really consider it a South-bashing thread.
I think it's really more of a twisted humor sex thread.

18. Of course we know it isn't so.
I don't get offended by stuff like this, though. We might as well laugh because people will think what they want to think anyway. Besides, every once in a while we get to play rascists and other assorted extras in movies when Hollywood comes to one of our picturesque little towns to make a Scary South flick.

16. No, jchild. Yes devlzown.
I am a son of the south.
Born in The Craaaadle of the Confederacy, Montgomery, Alabama.
Raised in Bombingham during the bad ol' 50s and 60s.
I am not into self-flagellation.
This story just popped up on my news alert this morning and I thought "Oh My God, it's like a bad dream. It's a cliche that puts (a little) truth to the tired old jokes".

On one level it's poking fun at me and mine, and yet on another level it's just so...sad.

The pictures look like something from central casting.
"We need a mouth-breathing, drooling, incest couple for 'Deliverance II'."

MS, LA, TN. Most of them also have an irreverent sense of humor. Guess the apple didn't fall very far from the tree.
